Lawler, Rock, Austin...they all made sure their characters stayed over as hell, and worried about workrate 2nd.
I feel like being a charisma wrestler is the real key.

In Kamala's Straight Shootin interview he did back around 2004 they asked him how his health was, this was obviously long before his diabetes issues. He said he didn't have any major injuries from wrestling since his style was mostly chops and kicks.

Rock wasn't a big bumper either. And that decision paid off for him too. I think it was a WWF/E Magazine interview but I definitely read a Rock interview where he mentioned something like, he didn't need to fall off of ladders like some others do to connect with the crowd. I remember at the time thinking that was a not so indirect shot at the Hardy's and wondered if there was any heat there. |

Just trying to think of good examples of guys or gals who wrestled styles with a minimal amount of bumping by choice, whether as upright or mat wrestling styles or what have you, and were/are considered good wrestlers versus someone like Khali who took a minimal amount of bumps out of necessity. Came out of a conversation about Hogan and Austin's long term health if either of them had chosen a finisher that didn't result in them landing on their tailbone and spine every night. Ryback said that his spine took a LOT of punishment from the years he had his backpack stunner as a finisher. |

Cassidy does a lot of stuff in his longer matches when he gets serious, and I'm pretty sure he was an Ant in Chikara at some point. The persona will probably help him in the long run if he's able to keep it fresh, but his body has to have miles on it already. |

I was actually thinking about this the other day while watching the ladder match dvds. Rock and Austin never really did any crazy matches besides cages and a couple Cell matches. And no dqs. Rock had, what? Only two or three ladder matches? I just remember Austin's against Vince & Shane. |

Jerry Lawler's up there, too, right? I've seen Lawler bumping his ass off on indie shows in front of a few hundred people during the past 5-10 years when he's booked to wrestle. Taking backdrops, bumping and feeding for comebacks, the whole nine yards. He works harder than some of the young guys on the show. Honky Tonk Man, on the other hand, has been known to "wrestle" but never leave his feet. Even magically does the shake rattle & roll neckbreaker where the opponent bumps, but he stays up. But the people come to see him sing his song and get a picture, so it still works for him. |
