Oh, forgot to mention the Japanese version of Castlevania III (aka, Akumajou Densetsu). I prefer that one because the difficulty is better balanced and more consistent compared to how the American release made it "tougher." Also had an easier to read font (the same on used in the original CV versus the stylized one in the American version) and wasn't subject to the censorship of religious imagery or bizarrely changing Sypha's gender to a man. Music also sounded better. That said, Trevor is still a better name for its protagonist than Ralph.

I have to believe Super Mario 3 was the pinnacle of what the NES could do and hit at the point when it was at its peak.
My personal favorite is Mega Man 2.

Super Mario 3 is the best game ever, so of course it's the greatest NES game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the clear winner, as for the rest runner ups I would say: Ufouria, Battletoads, Wizards & Warriors, Castlevania 2, Ducktales and Super Mario Bros. 2 (loved beating this one last fall 'cause I didn't play it as child)

My dad loved Hogan's Alley. When I saw it at the arcade, I sent my brother a picture

It's a tough question.
On one hand, I love fantasy epics, so both games in the Zelda series are must-haves to me.
I also like good platforming games, so the 3 Super Mario games and Contra are also must-haves.
Castlevania just had some really frustrating and tedious sections that pulled me out of the games or those games might have gotten my vote.
The top-down sections of Blaster Master were not as good as the tank sections or that would have easily gotten my pick.
Punch-Out is a classic that has few flaws.
Honestly, it is really hard for me to say which was the greatest. It's all a matter of taste. I gave serious consideration for Defender of the Crown, Ghengis Khan, and Shadowgate as well and I doubt anyone else can say that.

I'd actually say the original Super Mario Bros.
I'd say it's probably the greatest game of all-time but that may just be due to nostalgia.
