I like both guys a lot, especially Mick, but if I'm going to be honest, I expected this to be better. I've got a few theories as to what held it back for me. It's still good, but nowhere near what this pairing deserved.
1. Foley tries his best to do something unique with the setting by creeping on a dancer, but Bret seems really out of his element in this match, which isn't great when he's the one getting most of the offense in. I assume Vince or whoever agented the match wanted to make Bret look like a world beater face, but Road Warrior Hawk would be asking him what the hell was with his selling at points. Owen kicks him in the head like 4-5 times, and Bret just stands up like he's fresh as a daisy, not to mention his inability to stay down for most anything Foley did. If this was anyone but Owen and Foley, I'd be wondering what the f*** chip was on Bret's shoulder that day, but still, it's probably on the booking.
2. Vince is an awful commentator if you don't have him with the right pairing, and Sunny and Owen were not going to elevate him or have chemistry with him like Ventura did. This was complete trash commentary.
3. I forget how tiny the ring was for these shows to fit in the clubs. I think the match suffered a lot from the ring being a 16x16 instead of a 20x20 like Bret was used to. When BRET HART looks like he's kind of awkward out there, this isn't a good setup. The ref certainly looks lost, having to keep scrambling around. It's obvious how much less room they all have to work with.
4. Lastly, they just really would have benefited from having an angle together sometime. It'd have been fresh material for both guys, that's for sure, and the match was obviously given less importance than furthering Owen vs Bret. No part of this match's planning had much care for making Mankind look that good. Like, he wasn't jobbed out or anything, but it's a bar. The brawler should have been controlling the match more, not the technical guy who was going to get jumped at the end, anyway. It'd have been much better if it had come after Bret mounted a comeback, not at the end of a match he was never presented as being in even slight danger of losing.
I do want to finish by saying, it's not like the match sucks. It really doesn't, especially for a free television match. But when you tell me, "Bret versus Mick", I'd expect something a lot more inspired than this. This really should have at least been a Raw match.
