The remaster of Final Fantasy VIII drops tomorrow to coincide with its 20th anniversary.
What are everybody's memories of this game?
For all it's many, many faults this game holds a special place in my heart. The first FF game I played, and though I went on to play more, and better, installments of the series, VIII has always kind of stuck with me.
Moody protagonist! Junctioning! An awful love story! Time travel! Hurrah!

I personally have VII and IX ahead of it, but I’ve always had a soft spot for FF8. The uniqueness of the limit breaks are fun, and the junctioning isn’t that bad once you get used to it. Plus it’s a drop dead gorgeous looking world aesthetically, from how SeeD academy is designed to some of the guardian forces.
To tell the truth, Squall reminds me of Holden Caufield if he gradually became less pretentious and got a little better.

I almost find it funny with the juntioning system and card mod ability how easy it is to become massively OP early on. I do watched an LPer demonstrate how easy it is to get Squall to 255 strength and they weren't even halfway through disc one.

What I hated about the game was how at the end you couldn't go into most of the towns and stuff and they made up "time kompression" to justify it. But I love doing that in that kind of RPG.

If you don't know how to game the junctioning system, FF8 is one of the only RPG's I can think of that actively punishes you for leveling up because of how the scaling works.

Enjoyable game, but definitely my least favourite of the PSX Final Fantasy’s. I’ll be picking up the re-master at some point, I haven’t played it in years.

I have such a soft spot for this game, too. It's not the best of the Playstation 1 era Final Fantasy games. The story is ridiculous at times (the orphanage?), the junctioning takes time to master and the main villain and her purpose seems kinda tacked on at the end, but I always found it to be really fun to play through. I loved the world, I loved the card game and I loved the characters (especially Laguna!)

Even still, I never found it particularly hard. I was a dumb kid who didn't even realize scaling was part of the game, and I got Squall, Irvine, and Zell to level 100. I then got Rinoa's final limit break and used her for the final fight despite being like level 38. 8 may be my favorite Final Fantasy game. It, 6, 7, and 10 tend to be my go-to ones as a favorite.

First FF Game I ever played and its good to see it finally getting the love it deserves after being treated like the red headed stepchild of the franchise.

I loved 8
Great setting, I loved Balamb Garden, good characters, amazing music, some memorable character moments, good humour (I dreamt I was a moron still makes me laugh).
The Dollett Landing was epic.
I liked that you got the semse of a tight bound between the characters. They had little moments together that made their relationship feel so well developed snd real.

Legit my favorite Final Fantasy. So glad I'll no longer have to MASSIVELY mod the hell out of my steam copy to play through without being distracted lol.

Bit of advice for the game: Getting Diablos early, and getting that ability that lets you turn enemies into cards is a solid investment. If you get a Bomb card early, I recall that being pretty solid a start for doing well in Triple Triad. Beyond that, you can turn cards into good items, too, with another ability, making it that much more worth your time for getting some of Quistis' blue magic, or for being able to make some of the weapons.

I thought it was Quetzacoatyl(sp?) that gave you the card ability. Diablos gave you the Mug ability as well as encounter-half and encounter-none.

Either way, get Diablos early.

Another tip for the early game: In Dollet, you can level up your GFs while keeping your own level low by giving them all to Seifer and KOing Squall and Zell, then just have Seifer win as many battles as you want since his level doesn't affect the rest of the game anyway.
Also, you can kill the spider mech and get a get a ton of GF points by abusing Zell's Limit Break (or any other boss for that matter); just keep using O X, Left Right, O X, Left Right and you can deal more damage in the few seconds that the move lasts than you could with Squall's Limit Break. If you're quick enough, you can actually beat it 3 times and still have enough time left to escape the countdown. Also, if you use Haste on Zell, his Limit Break lasts a lot longer.
I assume the updated game hasn't changed any of these mechanics, at least.
