One year ago I pretty much gave up on WWE. It was a long time coming, but the breaking point was when they had a Hell in a Cell match between two of the biggest and most protected guys on the roster end in a f***ing No Contest.
For those that don’t remember: Roman speared Braun through a table, and Braun kicked out. Then Ambrose, Rollins, Ziggler and McIntyre ran out and started brawling. Then they climbed up the cage and brawled some more. Then they started climbing back down and two of them fell through the announce tables. And throughout all of it, Roman and Braun didn’t move; they might have fallen asleep, but they just laid there for a good five minutes, and keep in mind that Roman apparently knocked himself out with his own spear because that was the last move that either man hit. Then out came Lesnar, who hit each guy with a broken table fragment and then an F-5. Then the show ended, with no winner.
Now I didn’t watch last night, but from the reactions on the board, it sounds like they managed to defy all logic and possibly do something even stupider with Rollins and the Fiend. So tell me: Which was worse?

Okay so I didn't watch 2019 but reading the results it sounds like it was at least designed to get the match participants over, or at least one of them, rather than 2018 which was designed to get Brock over instead when he wasn't in the match, or even the company as far as I was aware.

This year's by a long shot, at least IMO, for a couple reasons:
-Braun had already lost a shitton of momentum with the senseless heel turn so there weren't as many people invested in him winning as there was with The Fiend, who's easily the hottest character they've had since tweener Becky last year. -It's the second year in a row they did that kind of bullshit finish, showing they refused to learn from last year.

Rollins vs The Fiend.
I mean sure, both Reigns and Strowman looked like straight-up bitches, but it wasn't a finish that may have destroyed one dude almost straight out the gate, killed the other one, hugely damaged the product and might have killed the town.
2019? Hell, that might go down as one of the biggest disasters in wrestling history.

Rollins vs The Fiend for many reasons.
Chief among them: "Fool me once, shame on you."

I think 2018 being legitimately one of the best main roster PPVs of the last several years helped soften the blow a little bit as well. You had a great match between Orton/Jeff and Becky/Charlotte as well as one of the best tag matches ever in WWE leading up to it, while 2019 had very much been a one match show up until the main event (I liked the Women's Tag Titles match a lot like I said, but it felt more like a really good Raw match), so it was like the cherry on a shit sundae.

Last year's match was dope with a bad finish. This year's match was bad midway into it with a horrible finish.
Last year's was worse.

So here's my one argument that 2018 was actually worse.
Mick Foley was the referee for that match.
Mick Foley, the man who fell through the roof of the cell twice, fell off the roof once, got tossed off the fence once, got the shit beaten out of him by HHH before his cell match against Nash INSIDE THE CELL and even as a referee was beaten the hell out of by that same guy.
Mick Foley, the man who booked 6 men into a Hell in a Cell match that scared Vince so much, he was willing to go to his hated enemies at the time and say "You know what, this is a bad f***ing idea. I hate you but I don't hate you THAT much (along with it being bad for business cough)".
Mick Foley, who has been in more brutal matches then some on the roster have had matches IN THEIR LIFETIME!
And after Brock comes in and kills both men...
He calls for a no contest.
Like...how does that not do anything except utterly destroy that credibility regardless of his low, low status at the time?

I didn't remember a damn thing about last year's Hell in a Cell ppv until you reminded me about the Orton v Hardy match and the Becky v Charlotte match. And I still have zero recollection of the main event no matter how much detail everybody has given about it. Goes to show how disposable and forgettable current-day ppv's are. What tag match are you referring to though? I need to look that one up.

I do vaguely remember that now that you mention it. Ziggler / McIntyre definitely do not discourage me. I suppose I'm one of the few around here that doesn't understand all the hate that McIntyre gets. And even though Ziggler's become a joke for several years I still respect what he can do in the ring. Even if it's primarily eating pins LOL

I'm right there with you. Absolutely none of these details ring a bell for me. And I know for a fact I watched it last year.

That said, Foley is at this point akin to the old crazy guy at the beginning of a slasher movie that tells the teenagers, "YOU'RE ALL DOOOMED! DOOOOOOOOMED!" They've drug him out dozens of times to either guest ref or just help promote a HIAC and he gets all pumped up and tells the guys 'THIS MATCH WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE! YOU'LL NEEEVER BE THE SAME!" Then it's just a match, and nobody remembers it a month later. This was already a pattern going back over 10-15 years now at least. I love Mick to death, but he had no credibility left to kill.

I think this is a prisoner of the moment thing. Personally I found last year's far worse, mainly because one F5 from Lesnar was enough to wipe out both Reigns and Strowman and the match ended in an actual no decision. Last night had a story they were trying to tell but they just communicated it wrong. The story was that Rollins was driven over the edge by The Fiend into doing some heinous things to win, but there's ways to do it that they didn't do right. Have The Fiend pass out in a hold like Raven for instance, then the ref stops it. As it is it just looked like the ref was being this whiny goof and actually DQed Seth for beating The Fiend up too badly.

You’re absolutely right about Foley at that point but it’s still kind of like “Yo, really? Really? REALLY?!”
