Around the time he started slimming down and making movies regularly, The Rock went from talking slowly and deliberately to like he'd had ten cups of coffee and did six lines of coke.
I think he slowed down a little afterward, but that time was just weird.
Anyone else recall this?

Anyone else recall this? Honestly, I think this is a bit closer to the truth than we'd probably all like to think. While this is purely speculation on my part, he was juggling two careers at the time and was new to Hollywood. I wouldn't be surprised if he had to take a few "supplements" to help him burn the candle at both ends.

I often wondered if it wasn't also because of the shows structure getting more rigid. Back when he started it was more lose and free flowing. "You guys have 15 minutes to talk and wrestle" vs "You have 37 seconds and we want you to say this, shill that, promote this, then let your opponent say something for 15 seconds. Then you have 17 more seconds to shill this and talk about pie, MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THOSE CATCH PHRASES IN THE FANS LOVE THAT SHIT, but don't forget to spend 15 seconds on...etc forever"
So Rock basically just motored thru everything a hundred miles an hour. Then some focus group probably said the fans love that shit. So they told him to double down on it. And BOOM.

I figured it was "if I say dumb shit really fast the fans won't have time to think, they'll just react.".
That may just be me trying to find a way to excuse all the corny dumb shit he says that gets a pass as hilarious.

I think a lot of it was him realizing he, and only he, could get away with it at the time. I f***ing loved “Hollywood Rock”. Still one of my favorite phases in wrestling ever.
