Pre-tax. Tax is something the businesses collects on behalf of the state. It does not add/detract from the service provided. That's almost like paying tax on the taxes you pay (like Quebec sales tax).

I tip on the total. I think that's the proper way to do it because I was at a place the other night and we had 8 people at the table so gratuity was already added and it seemed to be a percentage of the total rather than the pre-tax

I tip on the total. I think that's the proper way to do it because I was at a place the other night and we had 8 people at the table so gratuity was already added and it seemed to be a percentage of the total rather than the pre-tax And this could be yet another gratuity related thread. I tip based upon the pretax total, but it usually winds up being around 20%. The restaurants that add the automatic 15-18% are screwing their employees. Now on to the "proper" way. Again, the restaurant does nothing to earn the sales tax from you. The state mandates it. Don't pay the restaurant, or its staff, for something in which they have no part. Plus, if you're paying more, shouldn't the tax be adding value to the experience? Do you go to a restaurant and say "Boy that sales tax was awfully pleasing to pay today."

I base mine on the total bill, but it also depends on service. If you suck (must be on purpose - accidents happen), you're getting squat.
