That's pretty wild. That way people will always remember actors and their work until the end of mankind. I'm so jealous to some future guys and gals: when I'll be 100 % dead, there will be all kinds of great movies mixed with past and present stars. / I've no idea why some people are against this type of technology?

They should make a movie about the final construction and test firing of the first Death Star and CGI Peter Cushing to reprise the role of Grand Moff Tarkin.

No one. It’s kinda f***ed up bring back dead people for this I can understand doing the Peter Cushing thing, or if someone dies mid production or something. But this, there’s something really f***ed up and off putting about this. To cast someone for a new role in a new movie 65 years after he died? I’m don’t like it at all

Holy shit, we could actually make the Fantastic Four starring Golden Age Hollywood actors that was spitballed around in that other thread.

Honestly, I think it would have worked just as well if someone else played Tarkin. Charles Dance comes to mind. I think I might have preferred it to the uncanny valley that was jumped into.

after the idea of using them for advertising pretty much DIED! honestly the way the news was pumping this up as the first coming or something don't even need to do this because it's a gimmick and a year later no one will remember
sorry

Couple of random thoughts...
1) doesn't this undermine acting as a whole? Part of what makes some actors great is their ability to make an audience believe that what's happening is happening. Actors need to be in-scene to be able to react to pretty much anything... it's why scenes with 'green screens' tend to be difficult. Can a computer simulation be able to project any kind of emotion that would fit into a scene?
2) what if they bring an actor into a role that they wouldn't do if they were alive? Would James Dean want to make a war movie? What if the script sucks and he'd turn it down if he hated it?

That's a weird sub-section of the Uncanny Valley. Every single person I've talked to who *isn't* a huge Star Wars fan *and* watched Rogue One (a surprisingly large number of people) didn't notice the CG Tarken. Only people who KNEW that the original Tarkin actor was long dead seemed to notice.

I'd like to see (older) Judy Garland "cast" in something new.

Tarkin is a creepy sort of powerful dickhead psycho. Dude wanted the galaxy's biggest flyswatter and wanted to swing it freely. Didn't care who he killed/stepped on to get there.

I don’t get the uncanny valley thing. I thought him and Carrie looked pretty damn good in Rogue one

I just don't see how anyone can watch this and think it looks remotely believable, and this has the benefit of being a poor quality youtube vid

I picture Arnold Schwarzenegger in sequels he is no longer physically able to do, providing the voice only.
Can you imagine George Lucas tinkering with Star Wars with this technology? Thank God for the Disney buyout.

HOWEVER
before this was announced, i had another of my brilliant ideas ..... REMAKE LAUREL AND HARDY MOVIES IN MOTION CAPTURE!
hear me out before you light those torches and polish them pitchforks, when i was watching the documentary on them THEIR LIVES AND MAGIC, there was one amazing shot of the camera going THROUGH the studio, which actually did blow me away ..... and i thought how this would look by using the most recent effects technology
faces of course are arguably the toughest thing to get right in CGI, maybe the software is perhaps too precise in it's modelling .....
