This video from an Aussie indy show for Melbourne Championship/City Wrestling where Steph De Lander and Kellyanne wrestled in a No Holds Barred match for the MCW Women's Championship. It got me thinking about unprotected chairshots in wrestling and if they're really needed?
I like these two as workers, Steph De Lander (the tall gal getting her brains bashed in) in Kellyanne (the girl throwing said unprotected chairshot), are two great wrestlers, De Lander is someone who would be perfect for WWE with her height and look (that is if they didn't have more wrestlers than they know what to do with.) and I just hope that some people don't just turn their noses up at two talented wrestlers because of one risky spot.
I've never been one to be on the killjoy train of "IF IT'S NOT LIKE TERRITORY RASSLIN' THEN IT'S f***ING STUPID AND ANYONE WHO LIKES IT NEEDS TO GET BURNED ALIVE!" I've got no qualms with superkicks, with dives and with people wrestling a modern style because I was raised on that stuff, like the X-Division of TNA or the Cruiserweights of WWE were some of my favourite moments because of the fast paced agility of the competitors (even though I'm a fan of old school elements too)
That said, if I never see another unprotected chairshot in wrestling again, It'll be too soon, if you're going to get hit with a chair then at least put your hands up, wrestling's dangerous enough as it is without being plastered with a chair full force in the head. Like, they had a great match from what I heard, so maybe I'm nitpicking, but, in general, I hope that unprotected chairshots get phased out on every level, big league or indy.

I'm not going to lie, chairshots are an amazing visual along with the crack when it smacks off the head.
However, they are not worth the danger and long term damage. If I owned a wrestling company I would not allow them and if I had two trusted workers who insisted on a once off chairshot for a hot storyline then I would demand they get their hand up to block it.

I’m sure people thought feeding enemies to lions was an amazing visual as well, but there’s a reason we shouldn’t do that in 2019 either.

1. You don't need to do them 2. You can fake them in a bunch of super easy ways anyway

I would like to see couple protected (or gimmicked chair) shots in a year if those were used sparingly and as straight killing move.

I cringe every time I see one now. We have so much documented research on the effects of concussions and head trauma, why keep doing this kind of stupid shit when you know damn well the effects of it? Get those hands up, at the very least!

Anyone in this day and age who is willing to take a unprotected chair shot to the head, is a straight up f***ing idiot.

As someone who's general opinion on wrestling is "like what you like, let people like what they like, and don't insult people for liking things you dislike and vice-versa"...
Unprotected chairshots are f***ing stupid. That is all.

I'm not a fan. At least with Cody, the chair was gimmicked, it just didn't work as intended, so I grant it some leeway, but really, there are just much less dangerous spots you can do.
As cheesy as a lot of people think the ether rag spot is, it at least is safe while still being cowardly and evil. (Provided you're not stupid enough to REALLY be using a chemical-drenched rag. Gimmick that shit.)

I’m not crazy about them either. But are they all that more dangerous than the constant head drops and spikes people are taking?

WWE makes you have invasive physicals before signing. Taking them in the indies is stupid

I enjoy watching a chair shot to the head on old shows from WWF, ECW, FMW and the like. I do, however, cringe and find it irresponsible for anyone to do it in current wrestling.
Reason being, all the evidence that is available that points to build up of trauma and concussions.
Be safe. Get those hands up.

Logically, unprotected chair shots never made any sense. Think about it, if someone was swinging a chair at you, wouldn’t you try to block it?

I wonder why chairshots to the head was rarely used prior to the late 90s?

I wonder why chairshots to the head was rarely used prior to the late 90s? Probably because of ECW.

Reason being, all the evidence that is available that points to build up of trauma and concussions. Be safe. Get those hands up. I know you're kind of right but even before the evidence surely we had an idea about the danger of it? Let me put it this way, when my friends and I used to pretend wrestle we used to use those thick cover magazines as chair shots and after taking them my head used to hurt and even we used to talk about how maybe this isn't good for our longterm health and we started to throw our hands up so there was no contact with our heads. Now swap what was only magazines for chairs and even with zero evidence at the time surely they MUST have questioned the long term damage of chair shots?!
