Now that the LOLness of it has kinda faded, I think I get why the scene was put in there. If Lucas was going for a less murdery Han, it makes sense to (a) give Greedo a more threatening line to justify getting shot (perhaps Lucas' way of inching back to the original scene without resetting everything & admitting abject defeat) and (b) to buffer Han's line and the shot(s), as the timing makes it feel like it's all more sudden again.
I dunno, it seems like it's mostly a change/addition done more to affect the senses, which won't be the same for everyone.

At least we aren't still stuck with the weird CGI'd dodge Han does in the 1997 version, I guess.

A quick comparison of the changes over the years:
I'm generally fine with about 90% of the special edition edits, but holy hell did this one never work in any form.

Why doesn't Disney just release the frikkin originals? For awhile it was rights issues. But Disney does have rights to the originals now since they purchased 20th Century Fox, with getting access to the original theatrical cuts apparently being a major reason why they were interested in the acquisition to begin with, along with the Marvel properties Fox had licensed.
It's now a question of properly transferring the originals to a digital format that won't look like ass on modern TV's. Fans have already done it with the Despecialized Editions and Semi-Specialized editions. I don't see why Disney couldn't do it at least as good if not better.

There was a DVD release which included the Special Edition and the regular (not remastered & thus not excellent looking on DVD) editions, right? I still kick myself not having bought those...

They're still relatively easy to find on eBay. Cheap, too.

I'm sure they will, but they probably want to get it right.

I will for the life of me neither get the changing of the scene nor the outrage about the change, it comes as one of the stupidest things I've heard relating to the star wars fandom. The edit job was really dumb-looking and made Han look like a chump for about 4 seconds, but the outrage was so over-the-top and ridiculous. It was the first thing I can remember that made the Star Wars fandom look like it was made up of reactionary manchildren who used "George Lucas Raped My Childhood!" as their war cry. And it continued with the prequel outrage and now the Fandom Menace. Yeah, the original edit where Han's move slides down was pretty awful. But I mean... even after that Han still shoots Greedo dead in one shot and walks off like it doesn't' even effect him so the cold ruthless vibe is still totally there.

The changes have all been dogshit. Lucas' justification for them shows that he doesn't even understand his own characters. If he wanted Greedo to fire a shot, he could have scripted it to begin with, but he didn't. The original should be restored along with the cutting of the pointless and awful Jabba scene which tells you nothing you didn't already learn in the Greedo scene.
