So yesterday I dislocated my shoulder. No major story behind it, was just walking, tripped, and it popped out. Went to the ER and they popped it back in. Unfortunately it seems to have caused some nerve damage as my left forearm and hand are very numb and my fingers are pretty much useless (luckily I'm a righty). Went to the Orthopedic Surgeon today, he said this can take up to 18 months to heal (which honestly will put my job in jeopardy). Still waiting to see a Neurologist. Just curious if anybody else on the boards might have been through this. Is that 18 months a normal wait time or an extreme outlier? Any other advice? This whole thing just has me really worried, and I'm just hoping their might be some people around to ease my mind.

I mean, yes and worse, but I can't offer a lick of advice as it happened when I was born. I was in the process of turning when my mom went into labor and was being pushed out sideways. I had a lot of things get messed up as a result and even today still have one shoulder that sets lower than the other one does.

Right shoulder 6 times left one 5 times. They just pop it back in and tell me be careful I still have tingling in my hands from the first time and there is no guarantee surgery would work. So I just deal with it and hope for the best. I've done it so many times it pops out of socket at random

Yeah, my left was always a little screwey but a accident at work (that I never reported or got checked out) did a number on me. Numbness, tingling, occasionally things shifting. I learned to relax with it, employ exercise and yoga and other stuff such as floating in swimming pools and massages and what not.

Happened several times between 1994 and 2006. The first time happened while playing basketball and I swatted a ball. The very last straw in 2006 was when I was in bed and reached over to turn off my lamp. I finally had surgery later that year.
Flash forward to 2014, it happened again while playing volleyball. I was pissed (and in pain) because I thought it was fixed. My friends took me to a hospital and it turned out it popped out from a different direction and all the nuts and bolts from 2006 were still intact. The doctor popped it back in, but it came out one week later as I tried to close my car trunk. I had to wear a sling for four weeks, the fourth week being when I had scheduled a vacation. The sling turned into a plot device as locals kept asking what happened, only to start up conversation and give me directions to sites. I ended up meeting a girl in a bar after she asked about it, but that's another story.

Like I said in my original post, my left hand is pretty much useless right now and I'm wondering what recovery from that is gonna be like.

Both of mine pop out fairly easily. Usually I can pop them back in myself. Then 6 years ago had my right one pop out and I couldn't get it back in. Had to run to the ER and they popped it back in. Couldn't use my right arm for almost a week. I am right handed and trying to brush my teeth with my left hand wasn't easy.

I thought I did, during a seizure. It got fixed, but, it will still hurt, when it's going to rain out

I ruptured a disk which fragmented into my spinal column.
Okay, that's not true. I just got caught in the moment.

Like I said in my original post, my left hand is pretty much useless right now and I'm wondering what recovery from that is gonna be like. Nope, I never had any nerve damage. The only extended issue was from that four-week period I had to use a sling. By the of it, my shoulder muscles had tightened up from not using my arm for a month and I couldn't raise it beyond shoulder level. It took more than a year for me to get regular movement back, but that was mainly my fault for not rehabbing and stretching it every day.

My mother had a fall 4 or 5 years ago and still has those issues. They’ve checked her neck, wrist, and her back, finally wanting to check a nerve that runs from shoulder to your fingers that can get pinched, ulnar nerve entrapment. It all falls on how good the medics are.

One time I thought I dislocated my shoulder, but it turns out it was right where I left it.
It's always in the last place you look.

There was a time when I was a kid, after having seen Lethal Weapon 2, that I really wished my shoulder could dislocate.
