I misread the thread title and came in to vehemently disagree. Oh, TITLES. No, they don't mean shit. Haven't for a long time. A lot of people blame Russo for throwing the belts around hot potato-style in the Attitude Era, but I say that's false blame. The titles still felt important because the people holding them felt like Superstars with larger than life characters. Big Boss Man. The Godfather. Val Venis. D'Lo Brown. Mr. Ass. Road Dogg. Gangrel. List goes on and on. Any of them could hold the European or IC Title and they wouldn't feel meaningless because they were being held by actual characters who were OVER. Now? "COMING DOWN THE AISLE...GENERIC FORMER INDY GUY #2,371!!!!!!!" I think the InVasion did it more than Russo. I forget what PPV it was, probably more than one it’s just this quote sticks out, JR saying they had 9 matches tonight, 8 were for a championship. That’s f***ing ridiculous. The titles I think mainly exist to sell replicas and give a guy something to do. What’s AJ’s story been for years now? Champion or challenging for a title. That’s it.

Have all the title holders appear on every show. I think that would be the best thing to at least try to make titles more significant. At the very least, have the top guys/ladies on each show. Have one World Champ for the men and women. Have One Tag Team Champ for each show. If they are on each show (but the kicker would be no one else would be on both shows, besides Survivor Series and maybe for special circumstance during Mania season, for example), ideally, they would be seen as the top guys/ladies in the promotion. Then for the secondary singles, maybe each show gets one and those are used like the IC/US titles were back in the day. I'm not sure what to do with NXT (keep it as is or simply include it with the other two brands). I agree with others, that it's the booking that is killing their "value". They are booked to be "useless". The stories aren't strong enough to make them out to be important in the realm of the show. I think Daniel Bryan at Mania XXX was the last time I was legitimately happy for someone winning the WWE title. I enjoyed Punk's reign for the most part because he made it feel like it was important, even if maybe the stories didn't.

They haven't meant anything since about 1998 . I'd say '99 just for Mankind's win and then the Mania XV match between Rock and Austin. Those were both HUGE deals, IMO. But other than that, you are pretty much spot on. Even though they are props to the storylines, they sure didn't feel like that in these situations. The guys sold it like the most important thing in the world.

Triple H, Austin, Rock, and Foley for a bit were killing each other for titles and title shots.

The mid-card titles are what gets me. Those mean less than nothing. Nakamura may as well be carrying a bag of shit on his shoulder. Now there’s a gimmick. Big-assed Jake the Snake bag of shit.

The titles didn't start feeling meaningless to me until the Invasion started. Because you had the WCW titles enter the mix and there was so much hot potato swaps of the WWF and WCW titles between Team WWF and the Alliance that who holding what belt became completely meaningless. It shouldn't have taken them that long to unify the belts, especially since the Undisputed WWE Championship only lasted so long before it became disputed again with the brand split. And the new WHC conveniently looked just like the old WCW Championship belt.
I still think it would've been better if there was only one WWE Champion, who wouldn't be beholden to one brand. Make the US and IC Championships the top belt for each brand and the WWE Champion could alternate defenses between Raw and Smackdown.

I’d say the NXT Women’s championship is the most prestigious title WWE has.

Alex Riley is Ineffectiveness Personified I mean... dude botched "Stay in the ring" >_> It all started with the NXT 2 brawl where the pros attacked the rookies to prevent a second Nexus, and Mr. Riley figured he should attack fellow rookie Percy Watson instead.

Seeing Riley's name still gives me a reflexive shudder. Because of the Riley Wars? Or because of his actual run?

I think it's easy to make them matter, and titles for each brand is fine (look at the mid-00s Manias with Benoit/Eddie's moment at WM20, Batista/Cena at WM21, Rey/Cena at WM22, Taker/Cena at WM23, etc. But it's really hard to do it when Brock Lesnar just comes in and gets a title shot at a belt whenever, or when Bray's new gimmick gets him a title shot so insanely fast without a break to let the character grow. They just hotshot titles onto guys too quickly and keep putting titles on Brock.

They're so meaningless I had to stop and think for a second who was champion for each title.
In fairness tho I haven't watched Main Roster WWE in ages outside of Survivor Series b/c of NXT.

The belts are for different shows
Makes sense to me
Njpw has way too many belts but it works for how many shows get put on and hwving title matches on lesser tours
