They could've been huge! Er... I mean, if given time and the proper feuds, they would've been big...
Honestly, Quake-muffin deserved more than a goofy pun tag-team with Tuggers. He should've been bigger... aw, dammit!

Earthquake is a true legend in my book and a gaping hole in the WWE Hall of Fame. The Disasters team was great and for a kid coming to the WWF in early 92 (Royal Rumble - what an intro to wrestling!) they stood out and made a big impression. I love how they committed to the team with the name change for Tugboat and themed singlets. They worked best as heels in my opinion and I think the face turn was premature, probably a result of the backstage issues with the LOD at the time. But they continued to be a great team and got a nice little run with the belts.
I was really annoyed and confused by their use in the 1993 Royal Rumble - turning on each other may have been a way to sell the 'every man for himself' angle, but it just didn't make any sense that these guys would do that. In my mind I was imagining them running roughshod over everyone and maybe having a confrontation with Yokozuna or the Undertaker. Instead, they were an afterthought (like a lot of my favourite stars suddenly were in late 92/early 93) and cast aside. What a waste! A heel turn and feud with the Steiners would have been cool.
Poor Fred, in today's meme-driven culture the Shockmaster seems to have eclipsed his other work. I was never a fan of Tugboat, but the mean heel Typhoon was great and damn imposing. Sadly, my last memory of the character is getting punked by Doink in the lead up to Wrestlemania IX.

They were monsters to me as a kid. I was always like, "There's no way anybody can beat them." I loved those two big dudes.

They were exceptional tag wrestlers. The psychology they had was perfect. They understood tag team wrestling. Used their size towards the match structure and built around them cutting the ring in half and then smashing the crap out of you without mercy
Such a great team

Honestly, looking back at the Natural Disasters as someone who wasn't alive when they were having their run, I had no idea that 'Quake was so damn young or that both of them were athletic as they were, well, I knew of Quake doing dropkicks and stuff, but I didn't know that Tugboat/Typhoon was just as agile.
I think that they'd be a great addition to the tag team scenes of today, like, if they were around in their prime, like, these two big, beefy lads who could catch you off guard with their agility would be awesome to see. Hell, a dream match I never knew I wanted until now was the Natural Disasters against Keith Lee and Dijak.

I would not want to be on the receiving end of a dropkick from either of them. Ouch...

I remember going to a house show as a kid and making a sign that said “Natural Disasters Need Slimfast”. We were in the second row and I held it up and both Earthquake and Typhoon stopped and were selling that they were angry about the sign. Then I tried to take it down because I thought they would come over and beat up my dad and I but my dad kept making me hold it up. Then Hacksaw and Slaughter came out and laughed at the sign and gave me a thumbs up.

I loved these two big massive fat dudes who would squash everyone.
It also helps that both were so agile

This may sound funny, but when I think of Quake, I think of his smile the most. He had the best heel smile; either through him doing to muscle pose, or him in the chef's hat serving Quakeburgers; he seemed to love what he was doing.

I loved them and they were so scary and intimidating when they first joined forces. Cool backdrops for photos and promos. Filmed from below to look even bigger and jimmy hart helped that too. I liked the run with lod. I wish they had more impressive teams to go against. Like a mega powers type team. Hogan vs quake was played out so not sure who that would have been.
The timing was bad for their run. Too late for demolition and too soon for Steiners. I hated smiling face disasters. They always looked like goofs and getting tricked by heel teams. I wish they operated like twin towers in that they could sometimes work as a team and sometimes as singles. Typhoon never came across as a credible solo heel. It's a shame because they could have worked as top singles heel contenders to go up against top faces like taker, savage, warrior, etc after wrestlemania 8 had the face turn not happened. Natural disasters vs ultimate maniacs would have been a great program too. And quake vs taker would have been cool.

I love their dropkicks. Quake's looks more like an enzuigiri. Which would be awesome as well.

As with a lot of wrestlers, I appreciate them more after the event. They worked best as heels, used their size to their advantage but had enough agility for big guys too. I always got the impression that they were good friends outside the ring too, which makes me appreciate them that much more. The WWF tag scene was weaker than before in 1992, but the Disasters were definitely one of the standout teams at the time.

The tag team scene starting to go on life support around 1991, 1992, 1993 during the Disasters run probably hurt them. As others have noted, they would have benefitted from a better tag team scene. You had LOD, Nasty Boys, Bushwhackers, Beverly Brothers and a make shift team in Money Inc but the scene was nothing like it was just a year or two earlier and a few years before that. I also think a match with Steiner Brothers would have been good. Bringing Steiner's in as heels, the Disasters would have been a great fit for opponents. Distasters were real life good guys while the Steiner's tended to be on the heel side with the way they worked with other opponents.

I don't remember if Quake mentioned it on the board, probably, but he was actually supposed to play a role---referee or the equivalent--for the Big Show/Akebono match at one point. I don't remember exactly why, whether it was health related at that point or not.
And yep Typhoon was great as well, they both were two equals in a great team. Would dig a Jimmy Hart speech indicting them to the HoF.
Related, years back I wish I'd not been in the habit of deleting DMs on here as I had a bunch from a few guys who are no longer with us, Quake among em. John told some fun Owen stories at one point, don't remember details just that they were related to ribs.

Awesome team. Loved Tugboat's heel turn. He gets a lot of shit for his Shockmaster debacle, but he was a legit agile big man in WWE.

Awesome team. Loved Tugboat's heel turn. He gets a lot of shit for his Shockmaster debacle, but he was a legit agile big man in WWE. I’ll always remember it because Savage was still sort of a tweener on commentary and when Tugboat turned on the Bushwhackers, Vince and Roddy are shouting “What’s going on!?” and Randy says “It’s clear that Tugboat has been wrestling so hard that he’s forgotten who his partners are!”

I never cared for Savage on commentary but he was pretty funny during that match. I also got a kick out of Tugboat, Earthquake, Jimmy Hart, and the Nasty Boys celebrating like the NWO after Hogan's turn at Bash at the Beach 1996. "Tugboat, you can go straight to hell... Straight to hell".

I was still young and loved the big guy heel tag teams. When I first got into wrestling Akeem and Bossman would squash everybody, I loved it. Would have seemed more devastating if they kept Aleem as OMG

I did not have much access to wrestling back then so when I walked into a kiosk and saw the cover of WWF Magazine with the two of them as a team, teenage me was rather floored.

For years I've wondered what the plan was here. Earthquake comes in, goes straight for his own partner and dumps him out but I don't remember anything leading up to or or following on from it. If anyone knows any more I'd love to hear it?
