I'd really like to find a program or the like, either online or something I can download, where I can create a database of my book library - it would need to be able to include images of the covers and would need to be ammendable so that I can add titles that the database itself can't find (I know some link up to Amazon, but I have stuff that may not be on Amazon or different from the version there). I'm looking for any advise or suggestions on this.

I use a mobile app called iCollect Everything. It’s a one-time app purchase, but you can catalog almost anything you can think of all organized. It’s how I keep track of my books, movies and video games.
You scan the barcode and it’s accurate a majority of the time. You can also add items manually. Plus add your own images.

I just tried it out and it's pretty cool. It was free for the iPhone. Are there future in-app purchases that need to be made to keep going with it?

When the limits of both collections are reached of 75 items you can pay one more fee of $29.99 to unlock all unlimited collections. So you’ll be paying $40 instead of $100 if you bought each collection type separately.

I use Calibre ( calibre-ebook.com/). It's mainly focused towards ebooks, but I just had a look and I think it would work for what you want. If you're not using an ebook file to provide the info, you can create a new entry using an ISBN number and it will grab the info and cover for you. Or you can also create blank entries to fill in manually. Everything is always editable. It's got the usual filters for author, series, rating, etc. Best thing is that it's free.
