I picked this up last night---toldja crippling dvd addiction. Hasting's is having a sale where if you buy two clearance dvds you get a third for a penny.. so I got this for ten, A Scanner Darkly ( which I'll watch later tonight) for eight, and then my penny flick for the sake of weighing in on the Deus/DiG dispute was Minority Report ( I figure if it sucks, it was a penny and I can always take it back for credit or have a coaster to set my pepsi on--I'll have my opinion on that in a day or two after I watch it.)
So anyway, Hollywoodland--excellent lil film. Does a good job of presenting the facts as they're known about the Reeves death mystery and playing that off the character of Louis Simo the PI investigating the case. Adrien Brody is really good as Simo, Diane Lane really smokes as Toni . Mannix, and Bob Hoskins is good as Ed Mannix ( though for the life of me his accent did have me thinking of Eddie Valiant on occasion)
But the best part of this feature was by far Ben Affleck. For all the crap the dude has taken, he has acting chops and they really shine through here as he plays Reeves as a guy who desperately wants to be a star in the worst way, failing to see he already is a star to millions of children, a guy whose reach exceeds his grasp, and ultimately a tragic figure.
Interesting portrayal of old Hollywood, great acting, great story, a good time had by me.
Go watch this flick.
