Has it ever been said why re-releases of the Piper's Pit from WrestleMania 5 were always edited from 1997 until a few years ago when it was uploaded to WWE Network in its entirety? Several versions of WM 5 were missing the segment altogether or were edited strangely.
1997 WrestleMania Collection VHS: Around 2 minutes of footage (Piper taunting Brother Love, tearing his kilt, and BL running up the aisle) is shown from the hard camera with no cuts. It looks to be spliced into the show as when it goes back to the in-ring camera, the picture goes black for a second.
1999 WrestleMania Legacy VHS: Entire segment is gone (despite a picture from it being on the back of the tape's cardboard box).
2005 WrestleMania Anthology DVD: Brother Love having his kilt removed and leaving is gone. He is there one second and gone the next.
The 2005 edit was also present on the WWE Network version of WM 5 at first, but eventually, the missing footage was spliced into the show.

Because it went on forever on a show that went on forever and in the days before was archived for wrestling nerds like us no one in WWE thought "this is something we need to present unedited"?

I doubt it since I can't think of any other examples of them doing something like this. If I had to take a guess, it seems like either technical problems with the tapes that eventually got fixed or someone didn't like the part where BL exited the segment, since there was really never any editing of the BL/Downey or Piper/Downey parts (minus the whole segment being axed from the 1999 release).

They could have edited out Run-DMC, then, like how the instant replay debate has been edited out of WM7 (last I checked it still wasn't on the Network). No, there was some conscious decision to excise it that doesn't really make sense.

I will say that there are two other weird cuts on the Mania VHS rereleases that I noticed, that were restored later: WM3 - During the video package recapping the Piper-Adonis feud, the SNME match is cut off right after Ventura complains about managers being abused. Adonis spraying Piper with his perfume is gone as it cuts to the next clip. This is restored on the Network. WM5 again - The transition between Rick Rude's pre-match posing and Warrior's entrance has a cut in it. Monsoon's response, "Yeah, or conceit" and Ventura's "Here comes the maniac!" as Warrior appears are cut. On the DVD this is restored, but the screen goes green for a second. Since the Warrior edit does appear to be a result of a tape problem, the answer may well be that innocuous.

Since the Warrior edit does appear to be a result of a tape problem, the answer may well be that innocuous. Yeah, those edits are present on the 1999 Legacy releases, though not on the 1997 Collection versions. On the two DVD releases of WM III from 2005 and 2007, the full SNME clip is shown. On the Network, they also show the full clip, but the video is interrupted for a few seconds by a screenshot of the WM III intro graphic while the audio keeps playing. I think that was a mistake on the live WM III broadcast that was left in on the Network but fixed on the DVDs. Regarding the instant replay debate from WM 7, it was cut from the 2005 release because they just removed a lot of WWF references by cutting out footage rather than just muting/blurring them, and I think they may have just forgot about the segment when they put together the Network version. The full segment was included on both the 1997 and 1999 VHS releases.

Was that the segment with that scuzzy dude blowing cigarette smoke in Piper's face?

Was that the segment with that scuzzy dude blowing cigarette smoke in Piper's face? That’s what he did. His gimmick was being rude and smoking. Believe he died of lung cancer. Go figure. PS. I’m smoking right now.

I've always believed McMahon wasn't fond of how the segment played out and wasn't a fan of all the cigarette smoke.

I don't think that Run DMC segment got any cheers, it seemed totally dead. Even moreso for the Trump Plaza crowd. I thought the atmosphere with the fan base really hurt wrestlemania 4 and 5 but the set up was pretty cool. I like how guys came from the very top of the building but when they left the ring they went off to the left side to the back. This was rarely seen.
One of the silliest cuts I will always remember is Survivor Series 1987 (no, not Bulldogs phantom elimination) but during the first match when Jesse says "you might have Gorilla, they might have, but I never did" so randomly because there were portions cut from the last segment of the match. I remember as a kid trying to piece what Gorilla had said, rewinding and rewinding never even thinking something was cut.

Any decision that removes a sack of shit like Morton Downey Junior is a good one.

The company was leaning heavily on the kid-friendly side in those days, and Downey was the polar opposite if that. Plus, he was known to be a real life asshole. Add in Vince's complete hatred of smoking...just a really odd choice all around.

This was my 1st WWF PPV and I knew more of MDJr by that point than I did most of the wrestlers.

Any decision that removes a sack of shit like Morton Downey Junior is a good one. But the point was (with the exception of the '99 VHS) nothing removed MDJ. It was the Brother Love stuff that cut down.

As strange as Vince McMahon seems, he could have brought in the famed smoker just to embarrass him. Plus it would be a good image for the kids to see Piper embarrass him.

Prichard didn’t get the Million Dollar Man gimmick until he was on a plane with Vince. The guy behind them was smoking. Vince offered him $100 to stop. The guy said said no. He paid to sit in the smoking section he was gonna smoke. Vince said $500. The guy said no. Finally Vince offered like $1500 which was the guys ticket and some extra. The guy accepted. Vince said “See? Everybody has a price” At SNME Jesse was smoking a cigar. Vince got pissed and told him to put it out. Jesse did. Later, Heenan came by and took the cigar out of the ashtray and put in Vince’s suit jacket pocket. Says he never found what happened though.

Maybe they just edited it because did the world really need to see Bruce Pritchard in his undies?

I grew up with the Coliseum Video version of this show and it took me until I watched the Anthology version to realize how much time they shaved off a few of the matches on the VHS.
