Anyone else enjoy this gimmick? It seemed to be getting over and then he disappeared and they repackaged him which was a shame. He played the character really well.
The newz at the time was that Vince didn't get it as he never watched the Pirates of the Carribbean films which were popular at the time.

He disappeared because of injury, but then came back with the switfly nixed incest angle, which killed his WWE career stone dead.
And Burchill has confirmed in interviews that McMahon had specifically asked him to play the pirate like Jack Sparrow.

He blew his knee out on his debut and was told by management to either work hurt or go get surgery and be fired because creative may have nothing to him on his return.
Gee, wonder why so many young guys on the WWE roster developed painkiller addictions.

I liked him. Should have been a fun undercard character. Without it he just wasn't really that interesting.

He had a fun little feud with Hurricane Helms in ECW, but that was the extent of what I remember of Burchill

It's amazing how that incest angle led to him losing every match on ECW & somehow not understanding that the Hurricane and Gregory Helms are the same person but when you're given up on, you're forced to eat shit until the sweet, sweet release of future endeavored.

Was a great gimmick.
Paul blew his knee out and took off like a year for recovery.
Vince loved the character and multiple people including Burchill himself have said Vince used Jack Sparrow by name when pitching it to him.
Allegedly the WRITERS are the ones that hated it... that combined with Burchill's extended injury are what nixed the gimmick.
They came back with Katie and Paul on RAW where they didn't do much... even the "incest" bit people talk about translated to nothing more than one promo where Paul said something like whatever Katie wants Katie gets...
then he went to ECW as the Ripper with Katie... and that's pretty much it.
I always thought Paul was great but never really got much of a chance... if AEW or something similar was around at the time of his release he might have still been wrestling.

And they always started it with a camera shot of him on his perch, looking down the barrel and heās like āWell, here we go againā like heās in a sitcom or something.

I hated it.
I always had a soft spot for The Ripper character, and swore he was gonna be the next HHH-type badass heel.
Sadly I was very, very, very wrong.

Paul did an interview where he said the Disney Corporation pressured WWE to end the character.

I always thought Paul was great but never really got much of a chance... if AEW or something similar was around at the time of his release he might have still been wrestling. He had 3-4 dominant squashes on Raw, and suggestive promos about Katie, and then Mattel finally signed up to make action figures, a deal that McMahon had been chasing since the 1980s, Raw immediately went back to PG, and the angle was dropped and Burchill was jobbed out.

Remember his indy hype vid showing off the C-4 and making him look like Brock Lesnar, because the guys he was tossing around must have been about 5'5?
I was so hyped about him coming in from that.
I love everything about Pirate Paul. Considering Wrestlemania this year, I'd love if he got a small spot in the Andre.

His Curb Stomp was a hell of a lot cooler than Seth's.
The one where he pulls the guys arms back, puts his foot on the back of their head, and stomps their face into the mat.
