Besides, everybody and their mother knew Trips was winning. Rock and Hogan wasn't a guarantee.
Does Rock win for the new generation? Does Hogan politic his way to a win? Do Hall and Nash get involved? Does Hogan finally get a win in Toronto? Does Foley or Austin help Rock? Is this Hogan's big return victory? Is Rock leaving again afterwards?
Their match had all kinds of stuff going for it. And besides, people were really waiting for the Pedigree on Steph. Jericho was The Miz to HHH and Stephanie's Cena and Rock.

Rock vs. Hogan with the Rock winning and Hogan officially turning face makes for a powerful show-closing moment. I’m still pissed they didn’t pull the trigger on a Rock heel turn that night. He ended up going full Hollywood Rock anyways, may as well should have done the double turn. Rock and Hogan fight off the Outsiders, Rock offers his hand to Hogan to shake, Hogan accepts just to eat a Rock Bottom and a People’s Elbow. Hall and Nash join in the beat down and raise Rock’s hand to end the show as the new leader of the New World Order. The follow up would have sucked ass now that we’ve seen how Hall and Nash panned out but the show ending shot would have been epic.

No way were they turning Rock at Mania a year after the Austin turn. People would get tired of it and expect a stupid turn every year.

Then they could have done it at Backlash with Rock and Hogan teaming against the Outsiders. At least Rock had a legit beef to cause it. The fans were Pro-Hogan after Hogan tried to flat out murder Rock on live tv.

I was there and who you should really feel bad for is Lita, Jazz and (especially) Trish Stratus.
They came on right after Rock-Hogan to almost silence, and in Trish’s hometown (where she never really was as over as history will have you believe).

Rock vs Hogan main eventing is a quintessential case of "Hindsight is 20/20"

Plus everyone thinks Jericho and Triple H immediately followed Rock/Hogan even me. I’m just assuming you’re telling the truth.

This isn't the only PPV where this has happened. No matter how much people gush over the Bret/Bulldog match at Summerslam 92, Savage/Warrior was the main event. Taker/Hogan was the main event of Survivor Series 91 despite being in the middle of the card. Hell back in the old, old, old days they'd have the main event at MSG in the middle of the show just so they could announce next months card right after.

A lot has always been said about how it sucked for Tri and Jericho to follow Rock/Hogan but I feel worse for the women's title match that was in between them. No one talks about that match. "Breather matches" are such a stupid idea. Structure a wrestling card well and people won't need a "breather".
