When the Billionaire Ted skits aired. Man, those guys were ancient huh?
Perhaps this is the wrong section to talk about old guys in positions of prominence. Curious thing that.

Meanwhile, at that year's WrestleMania, Jake "40 Years Old!!!" Roberts, Roddy Piper, and the Ultimate Warrior all won their matches.

Funnily enough WWF won the ratings war because they were forced to make the younger guys stars. Now Vince knows he can grab a Goldberg for a ratings draw.

Surprised that they haven't done one at Jericho and Moxley DID YOU KNOW: The average age of WWE Champions is 47.5 years old, which is 18 months YOUNGER than AEW's Champion!

Not to nitpick, but Jake was pinned in his match. Oh, he was? My mistake. However, I should still address the issue that Vince called Hogan and Savage old and frail while he kept referring to Jake Roberts by his age every 30 seconds like it's a badge of honor even though Jake was just a few years younger than those two and how hypocritical that was. Not to mention a bit sleazy.

It's always been a bit of a mixed bag as far as wrestlers' ages at their first world title wins go. I would say that the age has been trending upward, though: partly because WWE usually gets its higher-profile wrestlers at the peak of their indie careers or even somewhat past the peak, partly because older champions seem to have a better grasp of how to sell the promotion to a wide audience, and partly because the slope down and out of the business is steeper than the slope upward.
In the end, though, it really depends on what the promotion is looking for in their top face or heel. If they're looking for someone to build the company around, WWE tends to skew to the early 30s guy. If they're giving the title as a thank you, the guy could be of any age. If the guy's a cagey veteran, age is a feature. If he's a hoss, it can be a problem, especially if the intent is to keep them going over. Over time, however, the older guys are supposed ultimately to put over the younger ones.
There are exceptions to this - I would argue that Goldberg's win over the Fiend was needed in order to put the Universal title back into play. Goldberg, unlike Lesnar, is keen to make any title look good. He'll drop the title to Roman when the time comes, as it should be, and he'll make Roman look good in the bargain, I think.

The thing is, 1990s 40 and 2000s 40 are completely different. The nutrition and training are vastly different, the guys are healthier, the medical care is night and day, and the days of living on junk food, coffee, and a 12 pack every night are gone. If you would put up a picture of 42 year old Savage, Piper, or Hogan vs. 42 year old Styles, Sheamus, or Shelton Benjamin, you'd swear the newer guys were a good 8-12 years younger.

Three years later, WWF/E's favorite punchlines entered the women's division and JR was all "You're never too old to kick ass in the WWF!" Not a new thing by any means.

This isn't anything new for WWE, I remember back when JR was crowing about the companies "youth movement" when the Road Warriors were making their way to the ring.

And a few months later, the Road Warriors became known as fat and slow with Animal playing Sophie's Choice between an alcoholic and a guy who vomits on command.

As a kid it always did strike me as weird seeing a balding dude like Hogan run roughshod over everyone with NWO as their lead heavyweight. I get he's "Hulk Hogan" but shit, he just didn't look near as dope as the others in the group. Like this pic. or this one It always looked like someone's much older brother trying to be the leader while the cooler younger brothers just let him because he's old. Shit was like Dr. Wily holding the world title lol.

I think you meant 2010s (or even 2020s, even though we're getting started). Because when talking about 2000s 40, the only ones I can think of that were around well into that age range were Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Triple H was still in his 30s during the majority of the 2000s and was at the prime of his career. I had mentioned this in a thread I did about ageism in wrestling: the Legion of Doom were treated as ancient when returning in 1997, but Hawk had only turned 40, while Animal was 36 most of the year but turned 37 in September of that year. Not really old. Hell, someone mentioned Warrior. He was only 36 at Wrestlemania 12.

He seemed lame to me. That's one reason why I loved DX because they were younger and they didn't have Doc Brown clowning with em.
