I think I maybe posted one of these in the past, but if anyone deserves two it's him.
Apparently today is 26 years since the day he died. That seems surreal. But how awesome was he? Anything he appeared in, you knew his role would be entertaining. He had the perfect niche of funny, big, good hearted guy which honestly seems like that was exactly who the man was.
Appreciate him.

Yes, I love John Candy. He was legitimately hilarious without relying on dipshit physical comedy like Chris Farley.
And as you pointed out, he was able to inject a lot of heart, a lot of substance into his performances.

Still remember I was at my brothers hockey practice after school, in the stands with my grandma when she told me he died.
Probably still my 2nd or so favourite actor.

He makes me cry every time I watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. That closing shot of him smiling as he is welcomed into Neal’s house. Jesus, genuinely tearing up just thinking about it.

When he's in the car talking to himself with that sad music playing always gets me. Sitting out there wishing his wife were there with him. "But I guess, that's not going to happen."

He makes me cry every time I watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. A lot of people like to mention movies like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink when they mention John Hughes' greatest films. For me, it's always gonna be PT&A. Candy was one of those guys who was overlooked as a dramatic actor because he was just so damn good at comedy. I feel like had he lived, he would've gotten his Oscar eventually.

He's one of the rare actors who could do drama and comedy both very well.

Who's Harry Crumb is another underrated gem of his. I really loved that film as a kid.
Really, his whole filmography is pretty brilliant. He could do comedy, drama, or mix both into a masterpiece performance. He was one of my dads favorite actors and we watched a lot of his movies together. My dad died 6 years after Candy and it always chokes me up for more than one reason when his anniversary comes up.

Or when Neal gets off the train and goes back to the station to find Del just sitting there. "Arent you going home?" "I don't have a home. Marie died 8 years ago." TEARS!!!

The guy was both a fantastic actor and a brilliant comedic mind, both in terms of writing and his improv chops.
I mean, he barely says anything here and it's just pitch perfect.

This is the best vacation movie of all time, don't @ me. Speaking of the Vacation movies, even just a small role like his great security guard proved to be really funny and memorable.

Small cameo and it doesn’t really jump out at you too badly, but he was decent in JFK too.
When I saw it as a kid, I’m Canadian, and only half paying any mind to what the movie was about, it really seemed odd but being older and seeing it, he was good.

All good points made. I think for me what it boils down to is he came across as his real. There's a line from Del Griffith in Planes... where he talks about being: "the genuine article, what ya see is what ya get." And I and I think most people 100% buy that that was John.
All of his characters even at their most comedic, come across as genuinely good hearted. Even bumbling characters like Buck or Harry Crumb, at their core you could see they were trying their best to be good people .
There was a sense of warmth when John was on-screen where he seems like a dude you'd love to have a beer and watch a ballgame with.
Even say a smaller part like his radio host in Little Shop of Horrors---I want to listen to that guy's show, it seems like fun.

He brought a lot of heart to roles. Funny, but you also would feel for him in a way a lot of comedic actors couldn't, then or now.

I was watching Cool Runnings Saturday, one of my favourite films ever, and damn if he doesn't knock everything out of the park.
Being the washed up guy, his speach to the Olympic committee, explaining why he cheated, and just all the layers you can feel at the end when he sees Derice and just says "Thank You".
All of it so real while also being funny.
