If Marty was less of a real-life f***up, I could see it having happened, but when Roddy Piper tells Shawn Michaels that Marty is holding him back, causing a big fight, and the majority of people would probably concede Roddy had a point, that's not a great sign.

Hard to believe, but there was a time Jannetty was a MUCH bigger name than Michaels. When Michaels was a still a rookie jobber in Texas, Jannetty was already a high-card guy in the midwest getting NWA title matches against Flair.

I know the guys started out differently and Shawn was never poor in the ring, but did Shawn have trouble showcasing his charisma in the Rockers and earlier? I remember as a little kid having my Rocker action figures and actually preferring Jannetty. They don’t seem that mismatched as a team watching them years later, but maybe I’m wrong. And of course once the heel turn happened any of Shawn’s hidden talents really came to the forefront.

All the other problems aside - did Marty ever work as a heel? He's kind of a doofus, but very likable in his own way. I don't think I can see the crowd hating on him. The New Rockers are hard to define as heel or face. They were more heel by king of the ring or summerslam time but a lot of it had to do with just how much the fans hated the gimmick. Also there were so few teams at the time, they needed the New Rockers to make up the heel numbers at PPVs. Marty himself probably didn't even feel like he was heel, he is such a good guy to the fans but I'm guessing Al Snow thought them to be heels to spite the fans. I think Al Snow during this time period had no heat at all and was a pretty generic talent so fans were bound to dislike him and probably just go to the concession stand rather than stay and boo. I'm thinking Vince McMahon in the early days of the gimmick thought it was such a cool idea that they just had to be faces and fans would get behind them but obviously it was an awful idea. I know they got the name like Dok Hendricks, based on music personas but as a kid Leif Garrett and David Cassidy were as famous to me as my next store neighbor so having that name based on acts from the 70s wasn't interesting at all to me. I did like some of their outfits, especially the one from summer time that was like a pink/purple blend.

I always wanted to see a stable of Marty Jannetty, Jim Neidhart, Bart Gunn, Headshrinker Samu and a few more “other guys” banding together to target their more famous former partners. I do like this idea, and would be impressed if it happened today, but all I can think of is the "Lisa's Rival" episode of The Simpsons where Lisa fantasizes about starting a band and their hit was "Born to Runner-Up."

Yeah, this is all mistaken--the New Rockers were definitely heels all the way and Leif was doing a full-on Disco Inferno clueless-relic gimmick. And picking Leif Garrett and David Cassidy as namesakes was clearly meant to invoke heat, since their respect as actual musicians was about zero, especially among older wrestling fans.

I always thought Jannetty was the better wrestler during the Rocker days I know what you mean; Shawn was impressive but looked a bit ‘’vanilla’ - long blonde hair, good morals etc. Jannetty seemed a bit more dynamic in promos and in the ring. Little did we know...

They really missed out on something by not brining Marty back during the attitude era and telling him to just be himself Imagine HHH bringing him along post Mania 14 as Shawn's replacement just to spite him. But I'm sure if that happened, DX would be the de facto heels against the Nation. And Marty would be in the spot Hawk was in that time, and if any of DX pushes him off the tron like Hawk the crowd would still not care.

I'd argue that it wasn't until Shawn's 2nd run that he was able to be as good as a babyface as Marty. As a heel, Shawn got that early, but when they were the Rockers, I always felt that Marty played the face in peril role better.

Along those lines, they had an article in WWF Magazine where Cassidy went off on a diatribe about why the Monkees were better than the Beatles. (I just watched the Nick Knacks video on the Monkees, which included the debate over whether or not they could be considered a "real" band).
