What if Triple H was the higher power, and the feud was switched at the last minute from Austin to the remains of DX?

I was dead sure it was DiBiase when the mystery was going on...
Money being hte root of all evil... Taker being brought in as part of Ted's team... it all seemed to fit together...

Was Vince a last minute replacement for their original idea, or was it always planned to be so dumb? Rumours were that Christopher Daniels was going to be the higher power, but he was deemed to be too small. That would even been a stretch now but in 1999 NO ONE would have had a clue who he was. So if that was the case Vince was the better idea.

Daniels was doing dark matches, iirc. So it's not unbelievable that Russo knew who he was. Your average fan? Not a chance.

The more I read about this angle in retrospect they were lucky it didn't crater ratings the way The Fingerpoke of Doom did.
A lot of 1999 WWF is an incoherent mess which is why so many of its shows are a chore to watch.
They were lucky things rebounded at the start of 2000 with Chris Kreski. It's a shame he didn't last long.

The only good thing about the payoff was that the Corporate Ministry mashup theme is awesome as hell.

I wonder how many times Russo pitched himself for it.
And I wonder how many voicemails Bruce Hart left on Vince's phone.

I mean, if you watch the Nitros that went against this time period, it's not hard to understand why this didn't happen. Yes, Vince McMahon's actions made no sense whatsoever and it led to him going heel to face to heel in about three months. He was the only main event talent really doing something like this. People like Austin, Rock, and Taker were still made out to be total badasses in spite of this angle really not making a whole lot of sense. On Nitro, every main eventer was essentially the Higher Power in their own way.

Has ol' Christopher ever even confirmed the whole higher power rumours? That sounds way out of this world, it was '99... did he ever even use Fallen Angel nickname or anything yet?

There's something I don't get about all this:
-Is it really that important that it has to be someone well-known as the Higher Power? If Christopher Daniels plays that part to perfection and gives off the vibe of a charismatic leader, does it really matter that he is unknown? Isn't it more important that the person in the role pulls it off convincingly rather than having name value?

Also, in 1999, there's no way Christopher Daniels can pull off being The Undertaker's boss, as much as I love the guy.

If it was mid-2000s Daniels, maybe, but while he'd been around the block by '99, he'd never been put in anywhere NEAR this kind of spotlight, and there was a lot of pressure.

Let's say he gets the role and nails it. The question on everybody's mind would be what does he have above the undertaker to hold this power and when will taker get sick of it and fight back. This was believable in Paul Bearer because of the mythical powers of the urn. The was believable in McMahon because of who he was. But for a wrestler to have that kind of power over the undertaker, he would have to hold some physical presence above taker, no matter how he performed, that's something that is just physically impossible.
