Apple TV is an interactive entertainment hub that picks up TV Shows, Music, Movies from the Mac (edit: or Windows, I guess as long as you use iTunes) and puts it on your big screen TV or surround sound system.
But for some reason that requires more CPU power than a Wii and more memory than a PS3. That still confuses me actually. But some people have hacked OS X on it making it the cheapest mac evar.

It's honestly meant for people who want to use ITunes, but don't have an Ipod. While the music feature is on there.... it's really meant for the TV and movie downloads from Itunes, so you're not limited to watching them on your computer... and since DVD Burners aren't commonplace yet... this gives that content a portability it otherwise wouldn't have.

I have one of those sitting on a shelf..... unfortunately, it'd fry my power supply.. so I need a new one before I can install the bastard.

I've actually played with one at an Apple Store. Like others have said, it's basically an iPod for TV, but you can hook it up to the internet and use it as a digital media receiver.
However, the quality of films and tv shows you can download is absolutely terrible and extremely noisey. You can play music and display album art, but why would you want to do that on TV? You can access photos and display them on the tube, but you can do that with a ton of different ways for much cheaper.
Basically, it's an excuse to give Apple money and make youreslf look extremely dumb in the process.
