...good or bad?
I know that the WWE has far more pressing issues than this one yet I for one was so happy when I got back at the end of September to see no general managers roaming around the premises making matches/punishing wrestlers/acting in non-sensical skits. It just feels more genuine that matches are set up by the wrestlers themselves and challenging each other instead of a higher power making it for them, making the former appear like obedient doggies that listen to everything da boss says.
So yeah, that is one positive thing that I like about current WWE at least.

I think the run of shows since has just proven “authority figures” to have been a convenient scapegoat more than anything. It’s not like everything magically became better when they went away.

That’s a simplistic way of looking at it. Authority figures were so played out that the shows have no choice but to be better when you don’t have the spectre of McMahon’s hanging over every match. Has it lead to must see tv? No. Has it lead to viewership increases? No. It is for me hard to argue that the shows aren’t better without evil authority people hanging around doing evil authority things.

I think they were part of the problem, not the whole problem, as evidenced by the still-declining viewer base.

I think "less worse" might be applicable here...

I'm now picturing empty arena shows with The Authority in full effect, maybe add couple guest hosts too. Could be fun.

I don't have an issue with authority figures in WWE generally but the problem is the McMahons have beat the authority figure role into the ground over the last tow decades. I think a happy medium between a jack Tunney type figure and the authority is how it needs to be. The old saying about how can I miss you if you won't go away comes to mind.

A way to look it ist is what NXT does. Regal is the GM, but how often does he actually appear? Only a few times, so when he does, you know some shit is about to go down. He doesn't dominate the show. You can have an authority figure, but it's best is used sparingly

There is nothing more to get out of the authority figure trope anymore Dario Cueto was the last unique take possible in wrestling with it.
Regal is a happy medium though between having one but one that only shows up when it is necesarry and has no direct involvement with any of the characters or stories.

In hindsight, now would be a great time to have guest hosts to add something more to the shows. Guest hosts aren't always great in front of a live audience, but now they could actually produce fun and interesting vignettes. In theory.

When regal appears “business is about to pick up.” I loved when jack Tunney would be on TV because Heenan would come up with some great lines. He called him jack “on the take” Tunney(which may not have been a joke given how his time with wwe ended) and he was “our best president since Noriega” at the rumble in 1992.

I wonder if they could do a multi-tier thing.
Like have the rarely seen brand GMs for big moments. But when shit really hits the fan, or whenever the right moment calls for it, you have the big gun, someone over all brands, come out. The commissioner, if you will.
The key is, the commish should only be seen 2-3 times a year. GMs, maybe once a month.
And in each case... they MUST be impartial and not become a part of the storyline beyond their rulings.
I think that’s the key.

It's weird because they don't have authority figures but we all know that Vince and company are making the decisions. It's the same way with AEW, we all know Tony Khan is booking the show. But with them, Tony has never been an onscreen character. With WWE, the same people are making the decisions, just behind the scenes and for the most part, they've been portrayed as heels (and yes, I know it's been slightly different with Triple H, but they've overall done more bad than good). I still like the change, but it wouldn't hurt to have Regal-esque authority figures that separate the McMahons more from the product.

Wow so they were serious when they did that angle and fired Corbin? They haven't had an authority figure since? I did not know that. I figured they had one but I didn't care enough to watch or look up who it was.

While I wouldn't say that the product has been better since the authority figure angle was shelved, I would also say that bringing it back would go over like a fart in church.
The issue is that, now, the company itself is the ultimate heel. Instead of seeing our favourite babyfaces conquer the world within that company, our most fervent wish now is for our favourite babyfaces leave the company entirely (and take a few of the more entertaining heels with them.)

They don’t have authority figures, but it still seems like they have them. That’s because every single week we are still getting long winded promos nearly every segment....which was exactly the problem with authority figures. Back in the day I didn’t like every Raw starting with a 30 minute HHH promo, later Corbin sucking everyone into the mid card vortex, and now they have wrestlers I can give two shits about babbling on forever about god knows what. No wonder the ratings are in free fall. It’s not even an excuse with quarantine....everyone was f***ing at home and bored! That should tell you how stale this shit is. Bored as people at home wont even watch it.
