He yelled 'THIS I COMMAND', wore that stupid outfit, and wasn't any more "successful" than Cobra Commander that I recall.
And didn't the GI Joe movie show that alien dude was really in charge anyway?
What purpose did Serpentor even serve?

Serpentor's inclusion was supposedly due to a directive by Hasbro; I assume to sell toys of him. Buzz Dixon, one of the writers on GI Joe wasn't really fond of the character and reluctantly presented two different origins for him. When Hasbro liked both he got stuck having to combine them, which then forced him to completely change his idea for Cobra's origins when the film came along.

Yeah, originally the leader of Cobra was going to be some Nietzche-esque college professor, and the story went that CC usurped his command, but Hasbro nixed that idea since they didnt understand it. Eventually, Buzz published what the script was going to be (with some updated touches) as "The Most Dangerous Man in the World".

I won't argue. Hated Serpentor but the movie gave us Burgess Meredith voicing Golobulus which was amazing as well as Nemesis Enforcer, who was badass.

That 5 parter origin was compelling as hell if you were 6 years old in 1984.

As you can see, the real deal with Serponter is that he's genetic amalgam of history's greatest warriors. He's in his early forties, is unmarried, and currently resides in Springfield

Serpentor is awesome and Snake Eyes sucks. If Hasbro would ever learn this then they might actually make a good GI Joe movie.

As someone who never saw the GI Joe cartoon (don’t know if it ever reached England), can I be forgiven for thinking that Serpentor was a snake version distant cousin of Skeletor?

He existed to sell a new toy to all the kids who already had Cobra Commander. Because I guess just updating Cobra Commander's look and selling new ones would have been too far.

Imagine a used car salesman wearing a bright orange snake mascot costume. His extremely lame character design is one of the main reasons nobody took him seriously.

Serpentor was part of the COBRA propaganda/brainwash teams foray into toy marketing for recruitment purposes.

He looks like he’d be more at home fighting Captain America rather than Snake Eyes.

In the Marvel Comic Serpentor was really well done. The cartoon... not so much.
But wow the figure looked great.

That’s bad...if he threatened you with world domination you’d never take him seriously dressed like that.

As someone who never saw the GI Joe cartoon (don’t know if it ever reached England) G.I. Joe was rebranded as Action Force in the U.K., though this happened long before the cartoon series, beginning in 1966 with Action Man (itself the licensed version of the original G.I. Joe figure). I had a handful of VHS tapes when I was a kid, including a full-length movie edit of "Arise, Serpentor, Arise", which got a lot of play at my house. As a young wrestling fan I didn't care for Sgt. Slaughter being renamed Sgt. Slammer.

The gi Joe/action force never really aired in the UK as far as I know. Even the video tapes were hard to come by. I did get a free copy of 'sink the montenna' episode and I think I may have seen the serpentor movie. Didn't cobra commander get booted out? I remember he had starscreams voice.
