He existed to sell a new toy to all the kids who already had Cobra Commander. Because I guess just updating Cobra Commander's look and selling new ones would have been too far. They did that a year later: www.yojoe.com/action/87/cobracommander3.shtml

Did you all prefer silvery-mask Cobra Commander, or the hooded version?

Serpentor looked more like a superhero comic character than a military related character.
To use a Marvel analogy. If Cobra was HYDRA, Serpentor looked more like someone from the Serpent Society.

Did you all prefer silvery-mask Cobra Commander, or the hooded version? The cloth hooded mail in Cobra Commander was my favorite from that line.

See, I don't think anybody involved with GI Joe has the right to make that complaint after the franchise became dominated by ninjas.

As someone who never saw the GI Joe cartoon (don’t know if it ever reached England) G.I. Joe was rebranded as Action Force in the U.K., though this happened long before the cartoon series, beginning in 1966 with Action Man (itself the licensed version of the original G.I. Joe figure). I had a handful of VHS tapes when I was a kid, including a full-length movie edit of "Arise, Serpentor, Arise", which got a lot of play at my house. As a young wrestling fan I didn't care for Sgt. Slaughter being renamed Sgt. Slammer. I hear you, mate; I’m a UK child of the 80s so know all about Action Man and Action Force. I had Action Man SAS, Eagle Eyes and the Talking Commander figures. Star Wars figures were where my loyalties laid, however. As I type this, I do remember seeing the GI Joe cartoon at one point too, but this was on Sky when it was only available in selected communities before the satellite dish boom of the late 80s.

I thought Serpentor was just the more badass alternative to Cobra Commander. He always seemed more legitimately evil.

Serpentor is awesome and Snake Eyes sucks. If Hasbro would ever learn this then they might actually make a good GI Joe movie. In the dark idiot recesses of my mind, GI JOE RETALIATION had a post-credits scene where CC had absconded to a secret lab - perhaps on an island somewhere south of the Gulf of Mexico - where Dr. Mindbender (briefly in Rise of Cobra) had retrieved Duke's body from the desert attack earlier in the film & was reviving him using the DNA of various other Joes from that attack and various Cobra agents and the previously-captured POTUS and also Storm Shadow & reprogramming him into a Cobra super soldier codenamed...... ....well, you know.

Serpentor's creation was supposedly due to a directive by Hasbro; I assume to sell toys of him. Buzz Dixon, one of the writers on GI Joe wasn't really fond of the character and had a completely different idea for Cobra's origins than what the film ended up having. Yeah, originally the leader of Cobra was going to be some Nietzche-esque college professor, and the story went that CC usurped his command, but Hasbro nixed that idea since they didnt understand it. Eventually, Buzz published what the script was going to be (with some updated touches) as "The Most Dangerous Man in the World". Ken Shamrock?!?

Remember that Serpentor's first act as a sentient being was to knock Sergeant Slaughter unconscious.... so it wasn't all bad.

Serpentor was awesome. Y'all trippin'. I am the one born to rule, destined to conquer. Let those who fear me, follow me. Let those who oppose me, DIE! FOR I AM SERPENTOR, AND THIS I COMMAND!

That 5 parter origin was compelling as hell if you were 6 years old in 1984. I was 11 when it aired, had no interest at all in GI Joe to the point I couldn't name any of the characters, and absolutely loved the Serpentor origin story when they put all the episodes together and aired it as a movie.
