I have to imagine that this is a situation where she might have been offered a chance not to work, but might have asked to; it's possible that this might feel like the best way to keep her mind off the tragedy, or to best honor her friend. As long as it's not a situation where she's feeling at all pressured to perform...but you're right that even if it ends up being therapeutic for her, it must still hurt like all hell.

Very sad, it has little to do with culture I feel, I can think of similar cases in multiple countries. Although in all it appears to be women who are disproportionately affected which needs a bit of looking at and some self refection by fandoms. The next time someone outrages you and you decide they need to be "cancelled" please remember its another human being no matter what they've done and if you can't do that at least show a little critical thinking...maybe whatever upset you was selectively edited, or the evidence it happened is flimsy or maybe it went down exactly as you thought but everyone messes up now and then and whats it to do with you anyway? Sadly I don't think it has much to do with "canceling"; it has to do with entitled fandom, that sense that "these tiny people on my TV/computer/phone screen are here to amuse me/entertain men/arouse me, their lives have no meaning beyond that role to me." Or, in a different yet somehow even more entitled sense, "this person entertains me, thus I am justified in being obsessive about them and will become furious if they ever deviate from the overly simplistic mental image I have of them and force me to confront that they are complicated, three-dimensional human beings."I certainly don't mean to single out Japanese culture for this; as you say, this is an international problem, and we've seen plenty of examples of people being bullied to literal death in the west for simply daring to upload a "cringy" (God, I loathe that word now) YouTube video, let alone be in the public eye in some way. But I do think there's a particular issue in Japan (and Korea, given K-pop) when it comes to that feeling of fan "ownership" of celebrities, particularly idols, the kind of thing that leads to public apologies and sometimes even head shavings for anything from infidelity to even just having a boy/girlfriend, etc., as if the fans are owed anything from that person besides the music/acting/wrestling/etc. they do for a living. Again, not at all exclusive to one culture, but just seems more out in the open and generally taken as a fact of life more in some places than others. It def isn't just Japanese, it a international as you said Look at the few years Roman has had. His brother passes away and people talk shit to him. His cancer comes back and people think he is doing this for TV. He takes a leave due to the pandemic and people still hound him. It is why I never really get upset when wrestlers clap back. These people get many messages a day from people telling them they suck and much worse. That shit is taxing on the brain. Just because you are in the public eye doesn't make you a "play thing" to take abuse and you're supposed to not feel anything from that. We can only hope that this tragedy brings some type of clarity to that certain section of fans who fun comes from f***ing with other people. This is sad and heartbreaking for someone that young to go

Yeah, I doubt it was against her will. For the record it was a banger match with Mei. But Asuka closed the show with a speech. They all cleared out and let her talk, Hana being her best friend. Asuka basically said "My only friend died today. I tried to wrestle today, and when I did, I realized I really like wrestling. Hana did too. I think she wanted to wrestle more. She made...the wrong decision. I love her, her and Flourish (their tag team name) will live on in me." =(

Anytime someone commits suicide anymore it really hits hard to me since my cousin's death is still in my mind from September. Hana was his age too. So heartbreaking. I dont know what kind of bullying she dealt with or how much pain she was dealing with in her own head.
Hopefully soon we will learn to better deal with anxiety and depression. It is still a pariah to a lot of people

this wasn't a suicide. this was murder by harassment. lets call it what it is.
RIP Hana. I hope you find the peace in death that was denied you in life.

People keep forgetting that wrestlers are human and seeing all the negativity makes the brain hurt

This is sad and heartbreaking for someone that young to go I agree the trolling and harassment from fans need to stop. Its why I didnt mind when Seth or Bray clapped back against folks. People keep forgetting that wrestlers are human and seeing all the negativity makes the brain hurt It's downright unsettling to see the way some fans of that show seem to be contorting themselves to justify being "angry" at Hana: that the guy she yelled at was having a bad day (bombed at a comedy show), that there was a misunderstanding about a trip he took with her and a couple of other people on the show, blah blah blah. Firstly...how does that make any harassment ok? Two people had an argument; it happens. They're human beings, drama will unfold, it's the entire basis of reality TV. Secondly, these shows are edited: who knows just how "real" much of it was, how much of it was a result of editing to depict certain people certain ways, etc. I get that this show is supposed to be more real than a lot of other current reality shows, but that doesn't change that it's still not real life, and even if it was why in God's name should any of us care about two adults having an argument? That's for them to work out, not us. But again, the effect of so many of these shows is to take people and reduce them into caricatures, or to do things to facilitate drama, or to otherwise create narratives because that's what audiences get attached to. These shows aren't academic studies of how people live when they realize there are cameras on them or they have to live in a certain type of home, it's just like any other show that thrives on A-to-B storytelling and three act structures. Put more succinctly: people constantly make fun of wrestling fans and say "don't you know that stuff is fake?", but some of them turn around and watch reality TV without a hint of irony.

This is such a horrible week for pro wrestling, Shad and now Hana and both of them are just tragic as f***, Hana was only 22 years old, that's 2 years older than me and she had her whole life ahead of her and was one of the people who helped me get into not only STARDOM, but other Joshi promotions and it's just such a tragic thing to hear about. Without sounding too cynical, I was worried about this after her last few tweets. She was someone who could've, and was on her way to becoming, a damn megastar and she had accomplished so damn much in so little time.
Surely, as human beings, we're better than driving somebody to suicide over a bloody reality TV show??

Because of a television show, and also because she is of mixed heritage, half Japanese, half Indonesian; and didn't fit the "Japanese" mold.
Disgusted doesn't even begin to describe it.

I do wonder how much racism/xenophobia played a part in this. Hana was Indonesian/Japanese. I remember her bringing up that that was a bullying point for her.
Escalate that into a national level, and geez, that must have been unbearable.

It might be me being from the UK, but I had legitimately no idea that Hana was mixed race until fairly recently, all I really noticed was the difference in her skin-tone. It's like when Aja Kong got bullied in school for having an African-American father.

All of the footage of her that I've been seeing looks like I've been missing out. She's an incredible talent that the wrestling world will miss. RIP.

Is there any way that the people who drove her to tragically take her own life will face any type of justice or punishment?
