Whenever this has come up in conversation it's seems almost unanimous that nobody actually likes playing Monopoly. The only times that I've seen positive statements about it is for the digital versions

My friend was playing with his future in-laws and at the time, girlfriend. He landed on whatever the f*** property and sat silently. When they finally asked what he intended to do, he said, to one of them, "You're the bank, it's your choice to buy it first". When they asked what the f*** he was talking about, he said "The bank has first rights to buy any property. That's what my grandpa taught me".
He learned through many years and many games his grandfather had taught him bullshit rules, always designed to make him lose.

I mean, it's a game that's intentionally designed to not be fun to play.
I think it can be fun if you house rule it to hell and back but playing it vanilla, nooooope.

Yeah, I've never played vanilla Monopoly and had a decent time. You're either arguing over who gets what piece or arguing over property.
The one with brands is a fun time, though, since somebody can at least *win* the f***ing thing.

I’ve never had the whole “causing family arguments” experience. Certainly not more than any other board game.

I’ve never had the whole “causing family arguments” experience. Certainly not more than any other board game. I feel that's due to place names. Like, if the names were certain UK cities, it would cause murderous arguments.

But most people I know tend to play it amongst immediate family where there’s no arguments over “why is Manchester more expensive than Liverpool?”

I know this shit, I'm Canadian, but my best friend is Irish and he married a UK girl. So I hear all his bizarre hatred. He's not that kind of guy, but it's still there. He still says things like "That's the Butcher's Apron!!!!"

It's ok if you ignore the shitty standard rules -- got to buy or it goes to auction, no cash for landing on free parking, etc.

It's fine with the right kind of people and if there's progress going into the game so it's not going 3 hours.

I do like playing it. Can never get many to play it with me though. My friend was playing with his future in-laws and at the time, girlfriend. It's the best board game ever, I hate that nobody wants to play it with me. I remember once my friend throwing the whole thing upside down - after I went bankruptcy and ' decided to "change my car to wheelbarrow and get 10,000 $ from the bank in exchange" ...

I got the Mario Kart version last year and it is great. It is set up so the game last at most an hour. Plus the few tiny rule changes helps speed it up and makes being the banker much easier.

Yes, it's awesome. When I play it, I turn into a full on Gordon Gekko.

I’m not sure I’ve ever finished a game.
At least with Texas Hold ‘Em you can inject the chaos of just going all in every hand when you get tired of it.

I do. I have multiple versions of the game, including a Mass Effect version and a pizza version.
