From the man himself:
This is from a thread over at the Wrestling Classics message board. I'd link it, but it's a thread mostly dealing with Cornette, so F that. You can find it in the first few posts right now.

Count me as one who would classify it was disrespectful, at least on a continuing basis with fans having no knowledge of the innocent backstory. JYD wasn't fit like Hogan but his big build worked for his character. I didn't catch much of his WCW runs but in WWF I never saw his weight be a problem for him. He was never slowed down by his weight and he always put on a good performance. I remember reading, I guess magazinesm where he was referred to as Junk Food Dog and as a kid I thought it must have been another guy trying to copy his name. I like jokes but I really never got why this one was supposed to be funny.

JR claims Bill Watts gave JR that nickname back in Mid-South because he would always drive JYD and then be responsible for getting him stuff from the vending machines. So Bill started calling JR the Junkfood Dog.

Anabolic Warrior of course, and I think he coined Flabulous Moolah too (YMMV considering what we know or think we know about both, but...)

Meltzer is a great historian of the business, but I really think he comes off like a douche a lot of the time. Just my opinion.

Regardless of its origins, its an inside joke that probably should have stayed inside

Did he coin "Big Slow" or was that just some fan "nickname" that took on a life of its own (Rock used it on an episode of RAW, but I had heard the name used on RSPW and other sites prior to that)?

His prediction for Warrior/Herc from WM4 is MUCH harsher in hindsight now.

Herb Kunze, who may have been even more unforgiving than Meltzer.

I think the biggest problem in the situation is that, as we've discussed in other threads, Meltzer doesn't really have that part of thinking that makes him realize his cute inside joke doesn't equate outside of it very well. That said, I'm not going to hold him over the fire for "Anabolic Warrior" - Hellwig didn't deserve the empathy of being outraged over that one. Yeah Meltzer could be a bit too snippy with some of his nicknames. Anabolic Warrior of course, and I think he coined Flabulous Moolah too (YMMV considering what we know or think we know about both, but...) Did he coin "Big Slow" or was that just some fan "nickname" that took on a life of its own (Rock used it on an episode of RAW, but I had heard the name used on RSPW and other sites prior to that)? That would have been long after Meltzer gave up the nickname thing.
