Looking back on the Hollywood Hogan stuff, it's pretty obvious Hogan enjoyed the gimmick. Even though he was playing a cocky heel, he was always smiling and laughing. Compare that to his babyface stuff where he rarely smiled and even his insane promos were always done while scowling. I get the feeling Hogan liked being a heel more since he could cut loose and didnt have to play a ultra-serious (albiet still over the top) superhero all the time.

It also probably helped that he worked way less as a heel.

I have always seen Hogan as a heel. He was just open about it when he was in the nWo.

If I was making that kind of money, I'd smile a lot too.

It's important to think of the mid-90s+ Hogan and the WWF Hogan as different people. WWF Hogan would never have even considered being a villain due to his love for the hulkamaniacs, but he was cursed and warped by the dungeon of doom into becoming a villainous snake. The Hulkster tried to fight it in the mid-00s, but he's never been able to fully resist the corrupt magic of the dungeon. A shame really, but it's the kind of dark fate that's befallen many of our greatest heroes, even Hercules.

That was only in retaliation to the heels doing the same to him first. He was fighting fire with fire.

Not particularly, he enjoyed being America's hero to the point he struggles to separate himself from that character to this day. In WCW, he was getting booed like a heel even while technically a face, so he had little choice but to lean into it. He knew he would be protected more than any face he was put up against, but even then it was a tough sell.

He was fighting fire with fire. 1998 Halloween Havoc demonstrated he wasn't very proficient anymore with fire. Needless to say, he was burned out by then.

Maybe the turn took a bit of pressure off his private life, the kind of face he was and it being pre kayfabe breaking era I wouldn’t be surprised if both companies had put in his contract he couldn’t smoke, drink, cuss, chase women or even refuse an autograph in public.

I wouldn't say he preferred because it took convincing to get him to turn heel in WCW but once he saw that's where the money was, he jumped on board.
It helps that he is a "professional". He threw himself in the role and flourished because he was the top guy again and all the shit he did that was getting him booed before can now lace up his pockets even fatter
So preferred isn't really the word. More so it's where the money was

It's Hogan's own view, so take it with a pinch of salt or twelve, but he's said he preferred being face.
There was a lot of creative freedom in the heel stuff and the nWo was a huge moneymaker, but he's said how much he missed the outside of the ring stuff like younger fans being happy to see him and being requested to do more of the Make-a-Wish visits than he did as Hollywood.

Honestly I think more than loving money,Hogan loves being a celebrity and worshipped, which as a face it is much easier to be.

Yeah Hogan hated being the heel. He hated being booed. He'd been offered Heel turns long before 96 which he'd constantly shot down. Its just by then he had no choice. By 99 he was back in the Red and Yellow or doing attempts to be.

Hogan likes main eventing and making money.
Until the mid 90s the money was in being a face. Then being a heel reignited the industry. When it started losing heat he turned.
