Instead of youtubing this thread I'm gonna offer a bit into the man.... written by William Kennedy in a cd liner note circa 1991 So Frank is Seventy-five and what does that mean? I remember what it meant when he was sixty-eight in June 1984. He was at Carnegie Hall singing "Pennies From Heaven" and "Fly Me To The Moon" and he was in great voice. When he did "Come Rain or Shine" a woman in a box called out to him, "Frankie, baby, you're the best." Frank asked her name and she said it was Angieand he said to her, "You ain't so bad yourself, Ange, you know what I mean?" "I just wanted to warn you that I love you," Angie said. "Is that a threat or request?" "I'm leaving my husband for you,"she said. "I think we gotta talk tha over a little bit," Frank said. Angie turned to the audience below to tell us: " I'm gonna wash his underwear too. I don't care." "I'm gettin' scared now," Frank said, raising his glass of whiskey. "I'll drink to you." "You're still twenty five to me," Angie said. Raise a glass to the chairman, there will never be another.

Did Sinatra write his songs? Cause I mean I just found out not too long ago that Elvis didnt write his songs and that kinda, like took away his status as King of Rock and Roll or whatever from him for me...

Nobody wrote their own songs back then. Except for Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.

Why would that take his status away from you? I mean, he still kicked ass on the songs, right? And for the record, Johnny Cash also wrote a LOT of his stuff.

There were better guys than Elvis, definitely. A lot of it is hype. He was still totally sweet though, don't get me wrong.

I'm one of the only 14 year olds I know who likes Frank Sinatra.
Start spreading the news, Im leaving today I want to be a part of it - new york, new york These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray Right through the very heart of it - new york, new york
I wanna wake up in a city, that doesnt sleep And find Im king of the hill - top of the heap
These little town blues, are melting away Ill make a brand new start of it - in old new york If I can make it there, Ill make it anywhere Its up to you - new york, new york
New york, new york I want to wake up in a city, that never sleeps And find I'm A-Number-1, top of the list, king of the hill A number one
These little town blues, are melting away Im gonna make a brand new start of it - in old new york And if I can make it there, Im gonna make it anywhere
It up to you - new york new york
New york

Songwriting is overrated. So is good music and good instrument playing.
Elvis and Sinatra > good songwriting.

I'm pretty sure the first time I heard a Frank Sinatra song was the second season opener of The Sopranos. They did a montage of scenes from the first, set to "It Was a Very Good Year." Listening to Sinatra got me interested in American standards as a whole.
One day I was listening to XM's standards channel and they played Sinatra's recording of "Being Green." Yes, the Sesame Street song. That was pretty cool.

I must like Sinatra, because even from beyond the grave he could kill me. Or have me killed. Or just f*** me up pretty badly.
But regardless of all that, his voice was amazing, and he was awesome. Long live Ol' Blue Eyes.

Frank Sinatra was NEVER called a musician. When it came to music, he was always called a singer. Which means, he interprets songs that are given to him. Back in the day, though.. his shows weren't all about, "Here's this song... (sings)... thanks, here's another.." the entire time on stage was a show where he would relate to the audience, tell stories and jokes... it was much more than the music itself.

You're right, and I think a lot of modern performers could learn from that. Today it's too much about "I wrote this song about my personal feelings, and I'm too disaffected to really put on a show or anything, but everybody listen to my art anyway because it's so personal to me. Now let's go cut ourselves".
Whatever, go sing to the mirror.
