It did but in some cases, they took the wrong lessons, which they seem to do with most things. Can't believe they pissed away a Cena vs. Rey Title match on TV. That should've main evented Summerslam. Cena vs. Mysterio main eventing Summerslam, then the show ending with Punk’s return would’ve been one hell of an ending.

I felt at the time and in rewatching it recently I felt Rey should have gotten a longer run than less than two hours. But if Rey is getting a longer run to summer slam does del Rio still win MITB and just not cash it in at summer slam ?

I'll never understand how they managed to f*** this up. Well the final shot of MITB is punk in the crowd with the title and especially having rewatched it recently it's even more puzzling as to how they took that great moment and I'm on august 29th episode of raw from 2011 and having watched summerslam also I'm even more baffled how they dropped the ball.

So glad that I was able to be there that night. The energy was electric, something I'll never forget. Never thought Punk would win, either. Definitely one of my favorite matches.

For me, this Is by far one of my favourite ends to a ‘story arc’ that WWE has ever done. Everything about this match was perfect.

I've been watching the raws before and after this show and I'm up till the end of august and MITB itself and the raws after it have an edge to them pre covid -19 raws just don't have.no LED aprons or ring posts. Cena and punk have this chemistry that's amazing. They've had two matches so far that I've watched and it's just good stuff. I remember loving Nast coming back but in hindsight his initial promo wasn't vintage Nash but they have been getting there. It's worth noting that the episodes of WWE television in the summer of 2011 were NOT directed by Kevin Dunn, but by David Kapoor who most fans best know as Great Khali's manager "Ranjin Singh." We have him to thank for the edge that this summer appears to have. From the Mark Henry eclipse-entrance to the frenetic presentation of R-Truth, there was a whole different vibe that stands out from the product before and since.

Well that makes a whole lot of sense in hindsight.

But if Rey is getting a longer run to summer slam does del Rio still win MITB and just not cash it in at summer slam ? Correct. I'd say he holds it to Hell in a Cell and cashes in after the Awesome Truth chaos at the end of the show (which was really the last great exciting different moment of this period), and then Punk-Del Rio happens at Survivor Series and then we get the massive Punk reign. I haven't gone back and re-watched this since the Punk stuff went down with Colt. I have happy memories of watching the PPV live that night with people, but now it's hard to look at pre-UFC-era Punk and not see the road he'd eventually go down as a person.

Well that makes a whole lot of sense in hindsight. To the best of my memory this is what happened: Kapoor severely hurt his knee in some, I believe, elimination chamber spot a few years prior, and after three years of rehab medical professionals diagnosed that he'd be walking with a limp the rest of his life. He'd always been a company guy (and I believe to this day he's still on the creative team) and had always wanted to direct live wrestling. So, Dunn (who had never really had substantial time off for two decades at that point) took the summer off and they let Kapoor live his dream.

I'll never understand how they managed to f*** this up. It’s when I officially gave up. I was really on the fence but thought this is so easy, all their is to do is let Punk crash WWE events like he did at ComicCon? If you really wanna do it right, have him defend the belt in ROH. Then he comes back after a summer. Instead.....

Didn't believe it was 9 years ago. I messaged my buddy and he didn't believe it was 9 years ago. We're both Punk fans so needless to say when Punk won we were both ecstatic. He even bought me a CM Punk t-shirt for my birthday.
Shame about the aftermath though.

Some times people overstate how great something was from a long time ago, but in this case, the reputation is well deserved. The build up and match itself were excellent, and made me (someone who stopped caring in 2002) want to watch. Ages well too.

I'll never understand how they managed to f*** this up. Where there’s a will, there’s a Triple H Its really an amazing match and angle. Everyone in there had a story. Punk obviously and Cena being courted by Mcmahon to be the Michaels in another Montreal but Cena being too good of a person to do that. Its a match that just works from any way you approach it.

Always wondered why that short period in WWE had such a cool edge compared to everything before and after it. It felt like they were hitting their stride in both production and writing again, then it just drifted back into the same old stuff.

I debated even buying this pay-per-view. I was certain-CERTAIN- that Punk was going to job to Cena here and that he'd be gone.
Punk was frustrated with the company, and had been for a long time. That was not news. But, that pipebomb was something else. I figured that, as awesome as it was, it would be a nice way for WWE to let him blow off steam to hype up his last match before leaving.
Imagine how over the moon I was when he hit the GTS for the 3, then ran out of the arena as the show went off the air.

I sometimes go back and just watch Punk’s entrance... I think that’s the type of feeling you can online truly get from wrestling.

When people ask what a Sports Entertainment WWE match is...well, this is one of them. It not only contains two people who know how to get a crowd to react to them but with a built-in story that was one of the few to be a "shoot" that made sense in kayfabe (and nobody had to call out any wives, whodafunkit?) but then you have it in one of their hometowns? There are WrestleMania matches that would have begged, pleaded, and possibly killed for that sort of reaction and connection. And then they actually went through and had Punk win?! Like, Christ, it should have set up a real paradigm shift in the company. I mean, it didn't but it should have. It's one of the best matches in company history, no doubt about it. Yeah, that was not me at all. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be clean or not, but I saw no way WWE was having Cena walk out with the belt that night. It wasn’t about “having faith in creative”, it was just blatantly obvious how high the company was on Punk at the time.

Eh, at the time, I was burned enough times by the Kofi feud and the amount of times DX, Taker and Cena squashed up and comers such so I couldn't exactly be blamed for being cynical about it. And also, this was the company that pretty much invented "losing in your hometown for heat" so yeah...
