I'd imagine its a combination of Eccleston getting enough distance from his bad times on the show and Big Finish essentially being its own entity not really connected to main series which brought this about.

He was hinting at wanting to do something again not long ago but it was one of those things where I thought it would have taken a while for something to happen. And yeah, the “canon but not really” nature of the Big Finish stuff puts more meat on this rather than it just being a weird side thing.

Doctor Who not having a canon is a dirty open secret that one should never whisper to a superfan, it's right up there with "kids show"

They already know it doesn't have a canon, that's why the last episode was all about creating a whole new unexplored one to subvert the old one.

Honestly the entire triumph of Doctor Who is that canon is what you make of it.
That's one of the reasons BF has been so succesful as to many people the audio plays are as ground level significant to them as the show (and in some cases even more so).

The show is about time travel. And time is inherently flexible or as the show itself put it "wibbly wobbly, timey wimey." That's why the "fixed point in time" stuff that RTD introduced never really made sense.

YES!!!!! They finally got Eccleston back for audios! at Chicago Tardis con 2 years ago I was talking to people at the Big Finish table waiting for autographs from Nicholas Briggs and I said that I feel within 5 years Eccleston would come and do audios caus im sure people involved during his run that do the audios are telling him how fun it is to do....however my pitch to Briggs of there should be a Doctor Who and Father Ted crossover where they get Ardal O'Hanlon to play Dougal who for whatever reason steals the tardis by accident leaving the doctor on Craggy Island so far has yet to happen.
