Background:
A longtime friend of mine, Victoria (not her real name) and her boyfriend Fred (not his real name) approached me this past week to ask me to aid them in a scheme. Fred had, up until now, been rooming in the house of an utter jerk of a slob. I have seen this fellow's home with my own eyes, and it was like something out of hoarders with junk packed in such stacks that it looked like a maze. As it turns out, this slob also had a basement in which he was keeping a cat. This cat is a stray that he simply picked up off the street-but proceeded to keep in a small cage for several years with nothing but its food dishes and a litter pan, a virtual prison cell. The few times Victoria tried to take it out of the cage to let it stretch and move around, she was thoroughly cussed out for it.
Well, Fred finally found a place so he could move out of this guy's house. This week was his final date to get his remaining things out of the house. The two of them made a decision to grab the cat while they were there and the owner was not home, and asked if I could board the feline in my apartment for a couple days until a third party who is willing to offer it a far better home could pick him up. I would have refused, but having seen this jerk's house with my own eyes, as well as pictures of the conditions the cat was kept in, I agreed. This way, should he try going to any kind of authorities, they can check with both Victoria and Fred and the two of them can claim "No cat here!"
We are now two days into this cat caper, if you will. Hopefully the new owner will be picking him up tomorrow and he will have a better life. I do not regret my role in this and would do it again, for his little fuzzy sake.
HOWEVER, today Victoria informed me that when they took the cat she also left a letter for the neglectful owner, shaming him for his treatment of this cat in an attempt to "shake him out of it." There are honestly few words for how dumbfounded and furious I was to hear hear this. I even shouted at her on the phone "You left a ******* confession!" I have no doubt he would have known who had taken the cat already, but without any evidence it would have been unlikely to go anywhere. But with a literal letter from her admitting she took the cat, that opens a very ugly can of worms. While I doubt the police will raise that much noise over a missing cat, she has definitely opened herself up to a lawsuit and those can drag on for years. For my part, I remain confident it is unlikely to come back around to me as this fellow and I have never even met, and once the new owner picks the little guy up there is no physical proof he was ever in my apartment. Victoria and Fred have both sworn they will never tell anyone of my involvement in this, and even if they do I can claim I did not know that had taken this cat without permission. But nonetheless, the sheer stupidity of leaving a literal confession leaves me angry and nervous.
So I am looking for any insight and advice. Thanks.
