I'm sure everyone has been duped into buying something they either didn't actually need or didn't actually care that much about because the advertisements made it look awesome, or possibly because you were young enough to not realize how stupid the product was. So let's share some of them here.
Easily, the stupidest thing I fell for as a kid was way back when M&Ms introduced... wait for it... blue M&Ms! Didn't make a shit bit of difference that I never ate M&Ms or that all M&Ms taste exactly the same no matter what color they are, blue was my favorite color and therefore I had to have some.
Another was getting swept up in the Beanie Baby craze. I was convinced that if I bought enough of them that some day I'd be able to sell them for a small fortune. Ended up buying about 20, then selling them at a garage sale for 50 cents a piece about five years later.
And good lord, am I happy in hindsight that my mom put her foot down against buying me a Furby. I can't imagine how quickly I'd have come to hate that thing if I'd ever actually gotten one.

Way too much stuff advertised on early-to-mid 90s Nickelodeon, I'll wager.
Shit, remember Moon Shoes? They weren't great.

You can burn whatever on this pan and still easily clean it. Bullshit You've reminded me of my dad being upset that my mum cleaned his old frying pan.
Anyway, I'm a guitarist, so I've probably bought all manner of tat because some snake oil salesman claimed it would make me a better musician somehow. It didn't.

Most video games which overhype something only to suck. No Man's Sky springs to mind. As does FF VIIR.

I have too many foil/raised/glow-in-the-dark/alternate cover comics in my possession...
And although I knew it was a 'ploy', I did buy Diamond Shreddies.

Damn you beanie babies! Now I didn’t go for the normal ones, I chased around town getting a set of the McDonald’s beanie babies. I waited in line for those things and did it cause my mom, a couple states away, wanted them.
Speaking of McDonald’s and their marketing, let’s not forget the arch deluxe, fish bites, and McDonald’s wings. Oddly enough I liked all of those

And although I knew it was a 'ploy', I did buy Diamond Shreddies. This is utterly confusing to me....did you never buy them previously? Or did you buy them because you enjoyed the gag?

They did a weigh in for Freddy Vs Jason in Las Vegas with Michael Buffer announcing.
It got me so excited for the movie. (Which I enjoyed but it’s still a strange thing to sell me on the thing)

Speaking of McDonald’s and their marketing, let’s not forget the arch deluxe, fish bites, and McDonald’s wings. Oddly enough I liked all of those 12 years ago at a local auction I bought still in the bags 2 of every Mcdonalds beanie babies they released. Was maybe 10 bucks total. They became toys for my dog. She loved the crab and the walrus ones. I was a bit lucky. As a kid my parents could tell what toys were scams and never got them for me. But I did pay full price for A Sega CD Sega 32x Jaguar CD Between the three I might have had 5 games worth playing. And all of that was bought on whatever I was making working part time while in High school. If we are including speculating on comics.... When Image started I was working part time at a comic shop. So could get stuff at a discount. Spent part of my graduation money to buy 100 copies of Spawn #1 and 100 copies of Youngblood #1. The Spawns I did end up selling off not long after the Live Action film came out. I think I got maybe 8 bucks a copy. Those Youngbloods sat and sat and sat. When we moved from Port Arthur Texas to Nederland I left them in a box in the old house. Who knows what happened to them.

Most video games which overhype something only to suck. No Man's Sky springs to mind. As does FF VIIR. No Man's Sky was definitely not great when it was released, but it's a pretty fantastic game now if you're into the kind of game it is. FFVIIR ruled, can't agree there at all.

Had moved on to 'healthier' cereals that cost more, went back because if the gag. That's how the ad campaign worked.

I loved the Arch Deluxe as a kid. Which probably was part of the reason they got rid of it.

In 2013 I bought AMD's FX 8320 processor because it had "8 cores" and was "future proof" because in a just few years every program would be using those multiple cores efficiently.
Unfortunately the "8 cores" was more like 4 cores that each can do two things at the same time but not in any practical sense. Also if only one core was used it was terrible.
