There was some breaking news last night right before the show came on. I imagine that took some viewers away.

Yeah, we'll have to see if this is the new norm going forward, or if the news that broke before Smackdown took away viewers.

Yeah, the news that broke was pretty big and right at 8 o clock. Would not be shocked if that hurt it.
But as I also said, they opened up very weakly. That Miz "Tighty Whitey" segment was really bad, especially to open the show.

That Miz "Tighty Whitey" segment was really bad, especially to open the show. That was just silly, and not in the good kind. 'OMG he's been stripped down to... The same level of undress he normally wrestles in, but the color and material are different so let's laugh at him anyway.'

I’m sure breaking news doesn’t help, but let’s not give the WWE any excuses. There really wasn’t any reason they would gain viewership

WWE is the only company where it and it's fans constantly blame bad ratings on other things. There was another sport on, there was an awards show, something big happened in the news, etc.
It's funny how other tv shows and their fans don't blame bad ratings on the same things.

I think its wrestling fans in general. Whenever AEW has a low rating or a big drop from the week prior their fans do the exact same, A bit more than WWE fans IMO.

To be fair, I get why it’s logical to think that way about wrestling ratings; news ratings are up across the board during the pandemic, so a major story breaking may have been a factor, and the long perception has been that there’s a lot of crossover between wrestling and legitimate sport fans, so a major game could pull numbers away from a show that’s just on every week, anyway.
Of course, the real answer is to watch long term trends and not obsess over small data points. Take multiple months or even years of trends and calculate that, instead, and most of the outliers and noise go away.

Nah, we mention it in AEW ratings threads too. Like when there was a noticeable spike in ratings for the second hour of Dynamite from a couple of weeks ago because the first hour went head-to-head with a crazy ass NBA playoff game (mind you the ratings for that Dynamite were still very good). And all sorts of excuses were used for TNA back in the day when they were on Spike. Wrestling just isn't priority viewing for anyone but the diehards, especially with how insane the world is lately. And I'd say it's a valid excuse for Smackdown this week because they're usually unopposed in terms of new, original programming that appeals to the key demos.

Wrestling not being popular and streaming instead of cable (I still prefer the latter by a large margain btw) both contribute. Like both companies are doing "fine" in terms of placement. They are still amongst the most watched on cable.
