and also the Quibi movies aren't actually sectioned out to be 10/15 minutes... so the episodes would just kinda end midway through a sentence at times. Wait, what? Most shows were filmed to be teh standard 30/60 min length shows. Quibi maxed out at 15... so episodes would just STOP at random points.

This is all some sort of money laundering thing, right?

This is all some sort of money laundering thing, right? Eh. It’s nothing like that I don’t think. It’s more the case of really rich people getting funding off other really rich people for a stupid idea that nobody realizes is one because rich people only think of things other rich people would enjoy and only them. Basically, Silicon Valley as a concept since the mid 2000s.

Like, there is a solid foundation of an idea in Quibi but when you’re not even asking any successful YouTuber or streamer or someone of that ilk what makes for good content and just going “Let’s throw some stuff at a wall and see what sticks”, it makes you look completely out of touch. And the CEO was an executive at Disney, Dreamworks and Hasbro during their successful periods. The f*** do you not at least try to understand an audience with that pedigree behind you?

I'll be honest. I subscribed to Quibi only to watch the new episodes of Reno 911!. Once the season ended, I canceled my subscription. Other than that Flipped show, I never watched anything else on there.

Well, they did just offer 6 months free last Tuesday for T-mobile rewards. It's still available as well, and IIRC a lot of those are given a certain number before they become unavailable. I'd try it but I already got the peacock 3 free months and I hate using my xbox to stream so I've never even used that, let alone something I believe is only available in phone app stores.

Serious question. What was supposed to be the major selling point of this? YOu can watch short movies and things on your phone! ... no I'm serious that was the point.

Look, when Dwayne Johnson isn’t willing to buy your failed product, it’s beyond the limitations of failure.

Not to make light of failure and the pandemic, but when the world is literally quarantined at home for their safety if you can't get a mobile video streaming service sold you dun goof'd significantly.

That’s actually a fair point (about as fair as you can in these circumstances) but if you look at a lot of the stuff that exceeded expectations during the pandemic in terms of getting an audience (Tiger King, The Last Dance, Fall Guys are ones I think of from the top of my head) and then see how much this thing read the room so badly and misunderstood audiences so much with the people on top that honestly should know better, it’s actually kind of amazing. Like for as much of a joke Katzenberg is now, dude not only helped Paramount get as successful as it was with Eisner, he helped Disney through an animated movie golden age and formed the closest rival Disney has ever had in terms of animated motion pictures. He’s got pedigree, he’s changed with the times and it’s astounding how short sighted the whole thing ended up being.

Well the problem is people stayed home and were able to watch more on their TV. We aren't as out as often where our phone is our only screen

We aren't as out as often where our phone is our only screen Quibi may have been doomed anyway, but yeah, the pandemic hurt it a lot. The target audience was supposed to be people watching a bit on their lunch breaks, or on the bus, or maybe while waiting for an event to start. WFH and quarantines killed it even if it was a smart idea, which is debatable.

Oh it's legit, it's just hoe modern Silicon Valley works now. Come up with a mediocre idea, pump hundreds of millions into it, value it at billions regardless of whether it not it's making a profit, then float it on the stock market to make it's eventual failure someone else's problem.

There are people in Silicon Valley right now funding ideas that can essentially be boiled down to “Rich person version of Bus” or “rich person version of tunnel”. Both of those are stupid, they could just use the money to fund the transport networks to improve them but why do that when you want your company to be known as “innovators”?
