And we're done. Another year in the increasingly bulging books of the Points Ranking Project. Every match from every year starting from 2008 (and the first half of 2007) has been scored for this project, to find out if a lot of our narratives about WWE's booking hold up when put to statistical analysis and mathematics.
As always, the blurb about the nuts and bolts of the process:
Now, these specific ranks are based mostly upon 2020's results (with carryovers from the last three years added in). In the next few days, I will start posting my all-time rankings, which will draw from the entire span of the project, before the inevitable recalibration that will occur when I finish scoring 2007. As such, I will hold off scoring 2021 until that point.
Anyway, here come the rankings (and yes, this does include an episode of Main Event that hasn't aired yet, but like, you know, whatever):
In the next post will be some various stats from the year.
As always, the blurb about the nuts and bolts of the process:
{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}HOW IT WORKS
1. Every wrestler starts on 500 points for having at least one official televised match in the calendar year. This includes outside enhancement talents (because you never know when they might be signed). A match is official once a bell rings to officially start it (or in other instances at my discretion). If a match is thrown out before this happens, no points of any kind will be awarded and the match will not count towards the wrestler's win/loss record (unless a specific type of forfeit happens).
2. A wrestler is officially ranked for the year by virtue of the following criteria:
*Being listed on the official WWE.com roster and having a televised match. This includes all personnel listed, including non-wrestlers
*Being listed on the WWE Performance Center roster and having 20 TV matches
*Being previously ranked under the other criteria any time within the current timeframe of the project (2008-2020) and having a televised match, under the Previously Listed Alumni (PLA) designation. For example, if a wrestler was wrestling in 2008 and earned a rank then, but then had a one-off match in 2020, they will be eligible for a 2020 rank and a rank in any year going forward in which they compete in at least one televised match. As the timeframe of the project expands, rankings may change as other wrestlers gain eligibility
3. If the match is indeed official, then the wrestler is given "appearance points", based on the show on which this match occurred. This can only be awarded based on the highest level show they worked on that month. For example, if a wrestler had two matches on RAW and then one at Royal Rumble in January, they will only be given the points for working the higher-level Royal Rumble. However, if those RAW matches were before Royal Rumble, the lower amount of appearance points can still be calculated into a wrestler's point total, with the remaining balance added once they work the higher-level show. Wrestlers can be awarded a maximum of 12 counts of match points in a year, one for each month of the calendar year.
4. Points are then either added or subtracted from a wrestler's "match points" total, based upon three core criteria:
*The finish of the match (pinfall, submission, match-specific finish (ladder, table, etc.), being a passive party in the finish (tag partner got the pin, didn't take the fall in a multi-person match, etc.), DQ, countout, forfeit or draw)
*The show on which the match occurred, whether or not it was the main event of the show (depending on the level of the show) or if it was part of an official tournament (the deeper one goes into a tournament, the higher the multiplier gets)
*The championship/prize for which the match was for (if the match was non-title, this isn't factored)
The second and third criteria act as multipliers for the first criteria, with the result being the number of points that is added or subtracted from the match points total. If a match is a draw or a no contest, the wrestler is awarded zero match points. In cases where a partner is on a winning team in an elimination match, but they have been eliminated before the conclusion of the match, they will have their winning points reduced by the amount of points lost from their method of elimination.
5. A wrestler can receive 10 bonus points if they can accumulate a five match consecutive win streak. In turn, a wrestler can receive a 10 point deduction for a five match consecutive loss streak.
6. Matches that are scheduled for the YouTube pre-show of PPVs are subject to a 25% deduction of possible gained appearance points and a 0.25 subtraction to the show multiplier in calculating any possible match points gained or lost.
7. Non-televised matches may be scored under one of two conditions:
*A championship changes hands
*The occurrence of the match is expressly tied into an ongoing storyline (the Cesaro/Sheamus rule)
8. Additional points are given in battle royal matches (including the Royal Rumble) for eliminating an opponent and eliminating the most opponents. If not all eliminations are filmed properly, or the match is rendered incomplete before half the opponents are eliminated, the most opponents bonus will not be awarded. In addition, specifically for the Rumble, 10 points are given to the wrestler who spends the longest time in the match, while 5 points are deducted for the wrestler who spends the shortest time in the match.
9. The elimination bonus will also apply for Survivor Series-style elimination tag matches and free-for-all style elimination matches (triple threats, fatal four-ways, etc.), with the most elimination bonus applicable to Survivor Series PPV matches only.
10. Additional points are also factored in for 2/3 Falls, Iron Man and Scramble matches, with points gained for each fall won in a match and points lost for each fall lost in a match (with the Rule 4 first criteria applied when relevant depending on the structure of the match).
11. Neither 24/7 matches that are not contested within the conventional match structure, nor Underground matches are scored by the conventional equations or added to win/loss records. However, if a wrestler wins the 24/7 belt at any point or wins an Underground fight, they shall be given one point towards their score for each instance, but are not awarded appearance points.
12. There are also carry-over points that are factored in to a wrestler's score. These are calculated to be a percentage of their combined match, appearance, bonus and penalty points total of the three previous years, that being 50% of the previous year (2019), 25% of two years previous (2018) and 10% of three years previous (2017).
