For whatever reason.
Of course usually we never find out, but sometimes your stuck or you feel like taking a chance. Then despite the stupid ads that make the product look like crap it turns out the product is great!
I was just listening to The Twilight Pwn and thought of that. It’s a podcast all about The Twilight Zone that I’ve been listening to for years. Aside from the stupid name it billing itself (jokingly) as the third most popular Twilight Zone podcast really turned me off. I’m a pretty big TZ fan, but I’m not about to subscribe to two TZ podcasts. I want the best!
So I actually gave two others a listen first. One was a guy interviewing random people about TZ. The first episode started with an elderly non-fan for some reason. The other was a guy by himself mostly reciting trivia.
So when I gave PWN a listen I was delighted to find out how great it was. I kind of enjoy the name and tagline now, but when I was a new listener who had to find it himself, that stuff turned me right off!

I feel like EarthBound would fall under this. I understand what they were going for with the gross 90s humor with the tagline legit being "This game stinks/It stinks", but I think it turned a ton of people off of the game. Not to mention if you wanted to get your RPG fix, there were better RPGs like Final Fantasy III/VI and Chrono Trigger around that time.
The good news was Earthbound got a chance thanks to Ness being in Smash Bros and people discovering the game, gaining its cult following. I'm glad I gave the game a shot because it's one of my all time favs. I would have missed it otherwise.

Oxyclean advertising was so overt and in your face I hated the shit.
Then I got stuck having to use it in a pinch once.
Now I love the shit.

It became a cult classic well before Smash though.

I mean, the entire advertising for Wii U was awful, and this is a classic, but I can imagine it turning people off.

Edge of Tomorrow’s trailer made it look so generic. In reality the film was awesome.

This sounds petty, but I’m automatically turned off any movie that uses review quotes in the trailer. No, sell the film yourself, I don’t care if Johnny Pancakes from The Daily Flobber thinks that “Tilda Swindon is an acting force to reckoned with..”.. yes I made up a name and publication, but the usual reviews are always from names and publications/websites I have never heard of.
Also the film is usually not out for months, how do they see the film and have a review so early?
I just think it’s a crap way to sell your film. If they need some random yahoo to sell it for them, I won’t be sold on seeing it.

I was very disgusted by the guy milking the giraffe for skittles. I just... can’t eat skittles ever again, even the purple ones that were my favorite. There was just something so wrong about that lol

As a Star Trek fan who really was turned off by Into Darkness, Beyond really did itself a disservice via the Beastie Boys trailer:
I have nothing against the group and if you've seen the movie, the use of this song isn't entirely nonsensical. However after a lot of the fandom viewed ST:ID as empty headed action movie schlock and feared Beyond might be the same, this particular trailer did everything it could to reinforce that fear, which among other factors led to the film underperforming. Something that's a damn shame because Beyond is a much more mature and character focused film than the two that came before it and many like myself didn't find that out until months after release. The strongest nu-Trek film was advertised as the Fast and the Furious in space and it paid badly for it.

Not sure how much actual advertising played into it, but Avatar was so frigging overhyped among everyone I knew and all throughout the internet that when I finally watched, I was so unimpressed with it.

Not bad, advertising. But overused advertising turns me off.
I refuse to use UberEats because of the amount of times I've been forced to sit through their ads on youtube.

For a case of bad and overused see the use of the trailer for Bucky Larson. That’s like an unholy combination of crap. It was a super annoying trailer and then some channels would play it MULTIPLE times during every commercial break. And it was for f***ing Bucky Larson!

I remember when I first saw the TV spot for Space Jam back in 1996 and was immediately turned off by it. I was so turned off that I absolutely refused to see it. It wasn't until I finally watched it through a rental that I started to think differently.

Years back I watched Bucky Larson at 2am on SHowtime...and it wasn't that bad. Hell I enjoyed it more than say Big Daddy or Lil Nicky. Not really bad ads but just annoying. Being raised in a mostly Catholic family I got use to fish on Fridays during Lent. Lots of the time once I was grown I would just grab a fil-a-fish from McDonalds. Then 3 years ago they had the most annoying ad "GIMME THAT FIL-A-FISH GIMME THAT FISH" that aired every ad break on Hulu and Youtube. I would fall asleep watching something on either service hearing that ad. Wake up 8 hours later and hear it again. Had a dream where that jingle was playing over and over and over. I haven't ate a fil-a-fish since then.

Quizno's subs were actually pretty decent, when you aren't being told to eat them by weird scratchy voiced goblins.
