At nine years, nine months, and 21 days since he previously lost it.
The only people who have a longer gap are The Rock, Brock Lesnar, and Bob Backlund at 10 years and change each, while he takes the #4 slot from Hulk Hogan at eight years and ten months. Not bad company to be in.

He's the only one of those five to have done that within a single unbroken tenure in the company. Rock, Lesnar, Backlund and Hogan all left WWE/WWF between those specific reigns of theirs.

Of course if you count all WWE world titles the list is a little different. Kane went just around 12 years between WWE world title reigns.

It was a nice run of nine years, nine days and 21 days where there was a better option

It both does and does not feel like that long.

It's actually worrying when you think about how much the WWE landscape changed between Hogan's reigns in 1993 and 2002. And when you look at how much the Hulk Hogan character developed over that 9 year period. And then compare it to how the Miz is still the doing the same tired act on the same tired looking WWE landscape as he did when he first won the title.

I would argue Kane should be on there... but that was also the WWF title and the World Heavyweight.

Miz also has the esteemed honor of winning only one regular Singles match within the entire last year, to then become the WWE Champion.
And that match was vs Otis to WIN the MITB Briefcase.
That's about as "Failing Upwards" as you can get in wrestling.

WWE keeps doing things that I expected them to never do but wanted them to do since I stopped watching.
It'd get me interested in watching, if I hadn't stopped watching because of all the immensely scummy people they still employ and their completely evil business practices.

If Edge beats Reigns at Wrestlemania, unlikely as that is, where would he fall on this list?

If Edge beats Reigns at Wrestlemania, unlikely as that is, where would he fall on this list? Edge officially retired on the April 11th, 2011 edition of Raw, and Mania this year is set to take place on the 10th and 11th. So, if they main event Night 2, it would be exactly 10 years to the day. I'm surprised they haven't caught onto this yet for storyline purposes.

I just now realized that, if Miz retains all the way to WrestleMania, WWE will have had the same two people in both world championship matches that they did ten years ago. I mean, I like Edge and Miz, but that is just sad.

Oh man. RD Reynolds posted this on Facebook, and it REALLY put this factoid in perspective:
“ Here's your pro wrestling fun fact for the day.
Number of days between Bob Backlund's title reigns: 3,986.
Number of days between Miz title reigns: 3,950.
This all adds up to one thing: Miz goes crazy and demand folks name all the US presidents in order to get an autograph.”
Joking aside...the last time there was a gap this big, the second time was literally about the person in question being a crazy old guy from a long-ago era...

I just now realized that, if Miz retains all the way to WrestleMania, WWE will have had the same heel defender AND face challenger that they did ten years ago. I mean, I like Edge and Miz, but that is just sad. Edge was actually the defending face champion at Mania 27. You might be thinking of when he challenged Jericho at Mania 26.
