I was watching the A-Team movie yesterday and I got to wondering why do creators feel the need to show origin stories for characters that do not need it.
In the A-Team movie they show the event that turns them into outlaws. Thats good. But they add this whole other scene in the beginning showing how they meet and become a team. Why? They are a military special forces team. Their origin is they all signed up for the Army, went through special forces together, and were assigned as a team.
JJ Abrams Star Trek is another example. At least in this case you can justify it by it being an alternate universe. But there have been attempts for years before that at origin stories for the Star Trek crew. But it does not need this. Their origin is Captain Pike was promoted off the Enterprise and new Captain Kirk was put in command. He met Commander Spock who had been with the ship for years. Eventually Doctor McCoy was transferred to the ship and became fast friends with them (there was a different doctor in the first pilot).
Any other examples?

Pretty much anything actually. It seems like it started with the Star Wars prequels. I'm not saying all these movies are necessarily "bad" movies, but yes, the shit is unnecessary. I don't care what Norman Bates was up to before Psycho. I don't care about Megatrons entire life story before he started the Decepticons. Any relevant information like that can easily be told in flashbacks. I mean hell, even the first Captain America movie could have been all present day with just a flashback to him in WWII that shows he's from that time. Then we can get right into the entertaining "man out of time" stuff without seeing his whole f***ing life story.

Then you got reboots that are origin stories like the Disney Misunderstood Villainess Universe (MVU)

but how else will we know batman is an orphaned bat or that spiderman was bitten by his radioactive uncle spider-ben?
those two are examples of un-needed origin story being included in films at this point

Because his kryptonian biological makeup is enhanced by Earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. But that would kill him.

Remember that Disney Oz film with James Franco.
That is one of the greatest examples.. It predates Maleficnet by a year. And shows unnecessary “oh they are just misunderstood” origins for the Wicked Witches and another for Oz the Great and Powerful.
Which in turn makes the Wicked Witch’s deaths in the 1930s Wizard of Oz film kind of anti climatic..
But good thing this Disney film bombed and almost everyone has forgotten about it.

They should switch the origin stories of various superheroes.
So Superman was bitten by a Kryptonian, Batman is the last survivor of a planet of bat-themed vigilantes, Spider-Man is from a hidden kingdom of spiderpeople, and Aquaman's parents were shot and killed outside SeaWorld.

Michael Meyers was born into a hillbilly family with an asshole stepfather and he was bullied by the kid from Spy Kids and that's why he snapped and killed people on Halloween.

The moral of this story? And the ones that followed it? PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE DISNEY THE RIGHTS TO WICKED!!!!!!!

Anyone elses he misses the point entirely. Supposedly he is involved with a Munsters reboot now.

I will say, however, that Superman, and Batman and Spider-Man, are not so much unnecessary as they are origins we've seen numerous times for decades and don't need to see again.

I think the scenes between young Michael and Dr. Loomis at the institution are good. I like the way the movie is shot a lot, I do like how brutal older Michael is with his kills. Brad Dourif is always a win for me and I do like Malcolm McDowell's take on Loomis and I did like Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie. It's just that first 10-15 minutes of showing Michael's home life that I hate.
