Don't plenty of people still call Mick Foley "Cactus"?

Steve Austin legally changed his name from Williams to Austin.
And Warrior changed his to literally just Warrior. Which is funny to me, cause I think "Hellwig" is a cool last name.
Also, I think I heard somewhere that Shawn Michaels disliked the name Michael growing up, so I assume he probably goes by Shawn for the most part instead of his birth name.
On the flipside, Triple H seems to be pretty comfortable just being Paul when he's not wrestling or on Raw or NXT.

How did he end up Diamond Dallas Page anyway? I get the diamond thing, but what's the Dallas connection, isn't he from New Jersey? If I remember correctly from his book he was a Dallas cowboys fan growing up and his dad called him Dallas Diamond is his birthstone, as he mentioned on the Joe Rogan show.

Many people that I’ve met from Denton, Texas refers to the family as the Von Erichs, not the Adkinson’s...
I’ve never even known when anyone of them ever went by their birth names.

Don't plenty of people still call Mick Foley "Cactus"? Yeah, I think Terry Funk called him that into like the 2000s, but I could be remembering wrong. A funny example of this name thing would be a woman waiting backstage at I think a UK indie show, when Sheamus was still Sheamus O'Shaunessy. Someone knew she was there as his guest and they told her, "Oh, Stephen will be free soon." "Oh, I'm here for Sheamus." I just love the concept of using his gimmick name to pick up dates.

A lot of wrestlers seem to refer to other wrestlers by whatever gimmick they knew them in first. Hence most people who worked with Foley before WWF call him Jack.

Honestly I think that's a pointless argument. I mean... Would you go up to Harrison Ford and call him "Han Solo"? These guys are actors portraying characters. I really believe some of these wrestlers are some of the biggest marks of all... I mean, imagine insisting on being called your fake wrestling name. Don't get me wrong, if a fan called me by my ring name, I'd be cool with it. But if he happened to know my real name, I'll also be cool with it... Because that's my name. You could make the argument that nobody outside your family and friends truly know you either... So has nobody else got a right to call you by YOUR name? I'm not sure this is a very good comparison. Raven is his professional name or his stage name if you will. At no point has Han Solo been Harrison Ford's chosen name, it's just a character he plays in movies. A more apt comparison would be would you feel comfortable meeting Elton John and calling him Reginald? Just because his real name is a matter of public record, doesn't mean that it's what he chooses to be known as in his professional life. Yea, pretty much this People forget there is a divide between professional and private. His "friends" call him by his real name or whatvever name that isn't meant for others to call him by. That's fair

That's fair I think the line drawn is when they don’t own the name, and when they leave a company, they make another similar name, change their name, or keep insisting people call them by that name even though they can’t legally call themselves that. Raven is one thing since he owns the name, but it’d be weird if he kept trying to get everyone to call him Scotty flamingo and tried to make a bunch of weird variations of the name outside the wwf I guess that would be the difference between Tom cruise, whatever his real name is, and Jerry Maguire

I guess her mom, Sweet Saraya, really liked that name. It's weird how much she likes that name, given that she just got it from trying to spell Slayer when she was on drugs. No, seriously. That's actually what happened.

Many wrestlers do. I once got very confused in a Kevin Nash shoot interview, because I couldn't make out if he was talking about Waltman or Michaels until I realized that "Shawn" is not referring to "Sean", but Michaels (Michael Hickenbottom), while Sean Waltman is being referred to as "kid".

Everyone seems to refer to HHH as Hunter as if that's his name.

It would be weird to walk up to Sting and call him Mr Borden.
Especially if you were adressing Mr Sumner.
Seriously, no wrestler is going to be offended if you address them by gimmick name. In informal settings they might say "Hey, I'm off the clock, call me <real name>".
Traditionally, in the business you go with with what they're introduced to you with. This is why you get things like WCW/ECW guys calling Foley "Cactus" or "Jack" whereas guys he met later guys tend to call him "Mick".

In the past 15 years of going and working at shows only had one wrestler introduce himself to me by his shoot name. Was AR Fox. "Hi I'm REDACTED but you can just call me AR"
