Usually because they legally changed their name to it, demands everyone refer to them as such, or gave it to their kid?
It took me awhile to get used to hearing people call Paige Saraya. I always thought her name was Brittany since it was her original wrestling name. I guess her mom, Sweet Saraya, really liked that name.
Brodie Lee’s son is Brodie jr despite His father not legally being Brodie sr
So is ddp, Is his name now Paige or Dallas? I’m pretty sure his name was Paige faulkenburg but everyone calls him Dallas page these days

How did he end up Diamond Dallas Page anyway? I get the diamond thing, but what's the Dallas connection, isn't he from New Jersey?

I am friends with WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Valiant and to me he will always be Jimmy but almost all of his friends called him Boogie from his time as Boogie Woogie Man in JCP and him living the gimmick the last 35+ years. I have older autograph items, before I became friends, where he only signed "Boogie" and when I message one of his younger friends from his hometown he always calls him "Boogie." When I communicate with his wife on messenger she always says "Boogie" and it's funny when she is going to hand the phone over to him she will say "let me get Boogie for you."
I wonder what it's like for older guys like Greg Valentine who have been known as one name for decades but their real name is something different. Like would all his wrestling buddies called him "John" or "Greg"?

The only guy who I’ve ever really speak out against this is Edge who insists on being called Adam, because that’s his name.
Everyone else always goes by gimmick names, everywhere. Even Alice Cooper’s wife calls him Alice, for instance.

Buff Bagwell is one I can think of. He just signs "Buff" for all his autographs no matter if it's a NWO item or a WCW tag team item. He lives the gimmick.

Calling him "Scott" is presumptuous if you don't know him, basically. I get the impression most wrestlers are in the middle, where they're fine, but also go by their gimmick names a lot since that's how they've met other wrestlers, usually, like how even Foley gets called "Cactus" or "Jackie" a lot of time by other wrestlers, and he's one of the ones where his actual name was acknowledged onscreen a good bit before he retired, plus his extensive post-retirement career.

Honestly I think that's a pointless argument. I mean... Would you go up to Harrison Ford and call him "Han Solo"? These guys are actors portraying characters. I really believe some of these wrestlers are some of the biggest marks of all... I mean, imagine insisting on being called your fake wrestling name. Don't get me wrong, if a fan called me by my ring name, I'd be cool with it. But if he happened to know my real name, I'll also be cool with it... Because that's my name. You could make the argument that nobody outside your family and friends truly know you either... So has nobody else got a right to call you by YOUR name?

I don't think he was presenting it like he'd hate it or anything, more that it was his preference. I think he also probably just likes to know right away if he's talking to a fan or if it's some other interaction.

There are maybe five people that I let call me that, to everyone else, I'm Jon. Also, while kayfabe is almost completely dead, there have been some shows I've been at where I was friends with a good number of the roster, and they'd insist on me calling them by ring names in case other fans, especially kids, would walk up. After a while, it just becomes habit. Then there's my friend who has a gimmick name, a nickname, and a real name. I call him mostly by his nickname, sometimes by his ring name, but I don't think I've ever once called him "Aaron."

I think a better comparison would be walking up to Tom Cruise and calling him "Mr. Mapother." Like, that's not the name you'd hear or read on a celebrity news show, it's not the name that he's promoted under for movies. If you do that, you're calling attention to the fact that you went out of your way to refer to him by a name that you found on Wikipedia, and like...why? To be a smartass? Obviously mileage will vary on that, as you demonstrate with your own experience. My instinct was that as soon as I heard CM Punk's similar reasoning for hating fans calling him "Phil" unprompted, I was just like, yeah, I don't feel like there's a non-jackass reason for me to do that if I were to speak with him.

I don't think he was presenting it like he'd hate it or anything, more that it was his preference. I think he also probably just likes to know right away if he's talking to a fan or if it's some other interaction. I'll give an example. Locally one of the bigger indie wrestlers is Rey Fury. Now I've known him since right before he started training. So if there are people around that don't know his real name I call him Rey. But if it is before the doors open I will call him REDACTED. Or take Paul Bearer for example. Met him at a PSP show back in 2012. After the show the promoters introduced me to him. I mentioned that I had met him years ago at the big&Tall store he owned in Mobile. And how back before he got into wrestling he had prepared my paternal grandfather's body when PawPaw died. "Just wanted to thank you for the great job you did on my grandpa MR Bearer." then mentioned how I had worked in am morgue for a long time. Got told "Call me Perc"Said like purse. Turns out he went by that for years since he was Percy Pringle III before he was Paul Bearer. Hell I can tell how long and where someone met me by what they call me. For example. If someone calls me by my first name I know they met me after I was 15,before then I went by one of my middle names. If they call me Ultimo or Gallos they met me at a wrestling show since 2015. And if they call me by my middle name they are family or known me since I was a young child. And if they call me by my last name they met me while I was in the military.

Ruby Riott, enough that on her YouTube channel, she addresses herself as Ruby, not Dori, her real name.

Raven is his professional name or his stage name if you will. At no point has Han Solo been Harrison Ford's chosen name, it's just a character he plays in movies. A more apt comparison would be would you feel comfortable meeting Elton John and calling him Reginald? Just because his real name is a matter of public record, doesn't mean that it's what he chooses to be known as in his professional life.

I wouldn't go to Gene Simmons and call him Chaim.
