Best known to most for losing to Jake Roberts at WrestleMania 2, what was the deal with this guy? I'm just watching a match vs. Bret Hart from April 1985 where commentary are talking up quite a bit and Bret only gets the win after a competitive match with a roll up and handful of tights (amusingly the network has pixelated Wells' arse-crack). I just assumed he was a jobber that lucked into a WrestleMania pay-day, but perhaps there were plans for him at some stage?

He was one of the guys Watts brought into Mid-South to try and replace JYD after he left for the WWF, I think he was known as "Master G" but didn't do much from what I recall seeing.
I think he did some work in Stampede also for a bit, but nothing that really stood out IMO.

From what I remember reading, Wells had an absolutely horrendous drug problem by the time he reached the WWF - although let's be honest, who didn't? - and had drifted out of the business by the late eighties. I wouldn't have thought there were any plans for him other than what happened.

Looking at his Wikipedia now. I had no idea he was around so long pre-WWF. Thought he was just a Canadian football guy no one in the States had ever heard of who was given the "guy from outside sport trying to make it in wrestling" gimmick.

From the sounds of things, him retiring and becoming a drug counselor is why he's in his 70s and not worm food, blunt as that is. He probably was given a shot due to being a name in some areas like San Francisco, but I imagine his reputation may have preceded him to have a remarkable drug problem even in that era of reckless drug use.

I would imagine with his football background Bill Watts and Vince McMahon would him. He probably didn't have the IT factor needed to make the transition. An early Wrestlemania could have a match with a jobber on the losing end like Wells.

I just had a look at his Wikipedia page and it threw up a nugget that I've never read before re. Bret Hart. Obviously being Wikipedia I'm taking this with a pinch of salt, unless anyone here can corroborate, but apparently Wells was an early tag partner for Bret during his initial face run. When Bret joined up with The Anvil he turned on Wells, leading to a string of matches pitting the Hart Foundation against Wells + partner.
So George Wells was Bret's first proper WWF feud!?

I never understood Vince's use of jobbers in the 80s and he had so many, it was hard to keep track. It almost seemed like there was at least as many as jobbers as mid-card to main event wrestlers. I didn't like how he made them so competitive, if someone can't beat anyone that is established as having a name for themselves, why did they have such competitive matches, eventually you have to win one of them? I liked how Jim Crockett just used them to get squashed and even if they last more than a few minutes, they almost never get offense in. There was a few guys like George South and Sam Houston that would have more competitive matches against top guys, but they were more JTTS than a full on jobber.

It’s not like Jake was some giant star by the time of the Mania 2 match. He had just started in WWF like a few weeks before.
