Thanks to Fangoria magazine I discovered The Phantom's Video Guide, a huge review tome like the Leonard Maltin movie guide, except this one includes the kind of movies he rarely covered.
The action and thriller sections has introduced me to several great films I was unaware of so I figured why not do a thread about it.
I tackled Eye of the Tiger first, with Gary Busey, where he plays the hero for a change in a small town version of Death Wish 3. Full of action set pieces throughout I enjoyed it thoroughly. And with William Smith as the villain they play off each other wonderfully.
This evening I saw Opposing Force, aka Hell Camp, with Tom Skerritt. Soldiers in a camp where they are to take a training course in surviving capture and torture gets more than they bargained for when they realise the commander has gone insane and they find themselves in an all to real fight for survival and have to find a way to escape. The characters are put through hell, with nary a moments rest. Slow build, but worth the time.
What are some of your favorite box office losers?

Just watched "Get Mean", aka. "The Stranger Gets Mean". Saw the trailer on one of the Drive-in Delirium trailer tapes... er, Blu-ray. Story: unlucky cowboy drifter hired by Spanish princess to find hidden Muslem treasure and fight an army of barbarians lead by a Shakespeare-quoting hunchback. It's as crazy as it sounds. Loved it. youtu.be/LjWxySrcRIQ

Next up for me was a gem called Nothing to Hide from 1987.
A hybrid action/triller/conspiracy picture with a rare female hero, menacing villains, a crotch chewing dog and the one and only Michael Ironside, for once playing a hero and a damn badass one at that. Hell, even Voltron serves a purpose in this one.
The film loses steam on a couple of occasions but contains enough explosions, gunfights and car chases to keep one highly entertained.

Been on a SPaghetti Western kick. Watching usually one a night late at night.
Keoma-Blu Ray from Mill Creek
Really well made and set right after the end of the Civil War. Franco Nero is Keoma, half Native American/Half white, comes home after the war. Discovers a General and Keoma's half brothers have taken over the town after a plague hit.
Twice a Judas-DVD from Mill Creek
Antonio Sabata and Klaus Kinski are the stars,Sabato has amneisia. There is a much better looking and wide screen print up on Youtube.
Fighting Fists of Shangai Joe-Mill Creek DVD and like the previous film a better looking print is on Youtube.
Joe travels from SF to Texas. Ends up fighting a group that are buying slaves from Mexico to work the ranches. Then the big baddie sends 4 assassins after Joe. One is a Cannibal. One looks like an evil Preacher and another is KLAUS KINSKI!!! But Joe beats all 4. So only way "Ta fight that Kung Fu shit is bring in your own KUNG FU!"
Fairly violent, but the martial arts showcases look bad. Doesn't come close to what Golden Harvest or the Shaw Bros were putting out at the same time.

I get that they were leaning into the gimmick, but Hobo With A Shotgun was spectacular cinema.

I get that they were leaning into the gimmick, but Hobo With A Shotgun was spectacular cinema. I finally watched it over last weekend. I now kinda get why there was a guy insistent that Kevin Gillis raped his childhood by allowing Run With Us in it. (well not totally, but I need time and a few good Raccoons episodes to not associate the song with....what I just watched there)

The Greasy Strangler is a magnificent crafted piece of art that's batshit insane and wildly dumb. Every detail from the makeup to the music to the characters are all both batshit crazy, totally stupid and yet possesses a level of real intelligence and skill.
It's hard to put your finger on a single exploitation type because it covers like 12 genres of exploitation.
I love it.

Watched "Never Too Young To Die" a few weeks ago.
In the middle of the 80s, there was a hot minute where John Stamos was 'the next big thing'. Handsome, witty, could sing, successful run in an afternoon soap opera, starred in a popular sitcom, so the next thing was The Big Screen!
The movie he made was "Never Too Young To Die".
This movie is why he went back to TV...

Robot Jox is a 1990 American post-apocalyptic Mecha science-fiction film directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Gary Graham, Anne-Marie Johnson and Paul Koslo. Co-written by science-fiction author Joe Haldeman, the film's plot follows Achilles, one of the "robot jox" who pilot giant machines that fight international battles to settle territorial disputes in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Jox

I wonder if a lot of those "rap" movies from the late-1990s to 2000s count in this subject. I am certain that there are much more recent ones out there. Hell, I remember coming across one with JT the Bigga Figga (he's a rapper from the Bay Area here in California for those who don't know) on Vudu, and that came out sometime in the 2010s (I must check). Recently, I had watched the State Property movies. Bad movies, yes, but the first movie grew on me. I thought that if I don't take it seriously, it's not so bad. The second one upped the entertainment value and that it took itself a lot less seriously than its predecessor.
There are plenty of other ones like this. Thicker Than Water (1999 film with Mack 10 and Fat Joe), I'm Bout It (No Limit film), hell, I guess you could put in Belly, Hot Boyz, Baller Blockin', etc.
