I've been saving up to buy a Nintendo Switch, and I've got a few options as I see it, and I'd love to get some advice to help me make my decision. Option 1 is the Lite. It's considerably cheaper than the regular Switch, and I think it has slightly more battery life than early Switches, but less than ones from 2019 and onward? Beyond that, it's lighter and smaller, obviously, and has a d-pad, which is nice. On the other hand, smaller screen, less battery than more recent Switches (which presumably I am much more likely to encounter considering how many times they've become rarer than hens' teeth), a smaller screen, inability to dock, and most damning, less recourse if I do experience drifting. Option 2 is the standard model, the benefits and drawbacks of which I more or less detailed in the previous paragraph. Biggest two things are docking and joy-cons being easier to replace, and I mean, pro controllers are also an option, one assumes. Option 3 is to wait for the rumored new model, but I don't know that I especially care to. It's still only rumored, I do not have a 4k TV, and thus am not especially concerned with that, and I would rather not wait the year-plus, while having no guarantees I can even get the damn thing when it'd be new, or how much it'd potentially cost. I also don't think waiting until then for a price drop on the other two models is a viable option when I don't really have any guarantee of how much that'd be or if it'd happen at all. Option 3.1 is to wait, but for some kind of holiday sale in the winter. Again, not really that interested in this option because it assumes I will have a chance to even get a bundle, etc, without hassle. That's a gamble, especially when I would have to wait months for it. I'd almost certainly have saved plenty by then, sure, but I would prefer to have a Switch sooner than like 6 months from now. What do you suggest? I don't know what difference it makes, but due to having a significant amount of Amazon gift card credit saved up, it'd be off of Amazon, regardless, so I don't have the option of buying a used one from elsewhere, etc, something I'd be loathe to do, anyway, due to doubts as to the quality.

I'd say wait for the newer model if you care about the new technical stuff with it since we know it is coming end of year. That depends if you feel like waiting as that will probably cost maybe $350-$400 with the higher screen resolution and all that
Otherwise, get the regular first version. I did so last year and i'm happy with it. A new screen is not really enticing enough to buy a new one and games going play the same so if you can make the purchase on that than do so

I’d always go for the standard model as for me, the docking is everything. The games look fine on the Switch screen and it’s nice to have that option but a game as beautiful as Breath of the Wild needs to be played on a big screen.

It's been rumored forever but as far as I know Nintendo hasn't said anything about any kind of update outside of the Lite. as for the topic at hand, I do a lot of handheld mode with my switch but I like the option of the removable joycons, and the Docking is nice when playing games like Breath of the Wild.

Even if I actually used handheld mode all the time (I don't, especially since pandemic and all), I'd still feel better about the regular model because JoyCon drift.

If it was a whole new system yes, but it is an updated model and most likely people are going to be thirsty for it

I'd probably go for the standard. Even if there is an advanced model eventually, there are going to be barely any if any at all games exclusive to it because it'd be marketing to a severely limited audience otherwise so it seems like a pointless purchase to me.
Though maybe that's kind of just a personal stance on it, since that's coming from a place of 1), four years later still not having taken my Switch dock out of the box, and 2), not caring about graphics.

We bought a standard switch 3 months ago after having the same dilemma as you. No regrets was the best choice.

If you haven't already check the price of the games you want, many you'd think might have dropped in price haven't. Might effect your decision.
Personally I have a lite, the battery is a bit crap but that's only really an issue if you're taking it out and about frequently. Otherwise I'm mostly happy with it. You might not like the dpad if you're into fighting games though.

End of the day its up to you, but in regards to new model...al we have is rumours, nintendo haven't announced anything of the sort. The lite is practical but there's a few games you cant play on it
Super Mario Party. 1-2-Switch. Nintendo Labo/LaboVR. Just Dance (any version) Fitness Boxing. Ring Fit Adventure. Surgeon Simulator CPR.
and in my personal opinion the ability to dock it and play on tv and play handheld is what makes the switch what it is. I've played both the lite and the regular and I find the latter a lot more comftable in my hands (more so with the hori split pad joycons). the size difference I feel isn't really big enough to make one more practical for traveling with and I feel like there are just more options out there when it comes to accessories to protect/look after/customise your regular switch (though thats based on my own biased searches)

I bought a Switch a couple of weeks ago and went for the standard version. The ability to seamlessly go from playing on the TV to playing via handheld is worth the extra it costs, IMO.

I ended up buying the lite. I never had any intention of playing the switch on my tv and I don’t particularly care for the removable controllers, so I just went for the cheaper model.

If it's just portable gameplay for you, go for the lite model.

I went with the standard model because I like having the option of playing on TV or portable. Also, the Switch Pro controller is excellent and while you can use it with the Switch Lite, it's a bit weird to use a separate controller with a handheld system.

Also, it's worth noting, that 3BitDo's SN30 pro+ works with the nintendo switch or PC and is a great choice if you don't want to pay extra for the official nintendo version. Also Hori makes switch controllers if you don't mind losing the wireless capability.

I went with a lite because, well, it was the only one I could find.
I don't mind not being able to play on TV, since the TV is almost always in use anyway.

I'd wait for the new one yeah, at least to see pricing and stuff on it. There's been enough evidence from sources like WSJ that have me convinced it's coming pretty soon.

I would advice wait & see. You may not have need for a 4K Switch but games can enhanced in other ways. It seems like the more time passes, the worse newer Switch games are looking. Pokemon Legends had horrific framerate in it's trailer & Hyrule Warriors gave me issues if I was playing on anything larger than a 720P screen. I'm expecting a bunch of titles like Witcher 3 or Outer Worlds to get performance patches to take advantage of the new hardware.
& then there's the prospect of Pro Exclusive games, like how New 3DS had Xenoblade & Minecraft as exclusives. There probably won't be many but I expect at least 1 or 2 choice picks.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I'll save for the regular Switch. The easier way to use pro controllers or equivalents without having to stare at the console on a kickstand and the upgraded battery on the newer Switch models are worth the extra hundred bucks for me.
Worst comes to worst, I can just get the upgrade down the line, but it isn't like the Switch has some shortage of games as it is, and judging by the past, it's not like the new one would be easy to buy anytime quickly.

You know, may as well ask here: given I intend to buy the regular Switch, what are some must-have accessories you'd recommend? Games, I already have a pretty good idea of what I'd go for.
