There were two moments that made me gasp on Dynamite, the US title match announcement and this.
Yeah, Cage had the advantage with the ambush before the match but the fact that it happened was still a big deal and made things way more interesting going into Double or Nothing and beyond. Good for them making it a big deal with the replay too, they rarely do replays for match wins besides title matches from what I remember.
Seriously, when Cage set up the Drill Killer, I was like "Man, it'll be a shame when Page kicks out of that" and...he didn't.

I am honestly in favor of it. I love Page, but it's too early for Hangman vs Kenny just yet, and Brian Cage needed a high profile win, as did Team Taz in general.

I was really surprised by it too! The more I think about it though, the more I like it. With Hangman being #1 in the rankings for as long as he has been (and the commentators making a point of it) they couldn't really delay the match with Kenny for much longer. But, it seems waaaaay too early in Kenny's reign for the match with Page, unless Page was going to lose.
This puts back the inevitable match with Kenny (that Hangman hopefully wins) and can lead to more nuances in Hangman's character.

Was wondering when they would have Hangman lose. I'll keep saying this but they clearly are not giving him his world title match till at least All Out.
And if we are honest Cage needed a big singles win

Right, it makes sense, especially since I really don't think Hangman should get a title match unless he wins it, given how they've built up his downward spiral from the Jericho match and have carefully kept him from a title match since. I also feel like things have maybe been going a bit too swimmingly for him since the Hardy feud that he pretty handily won. He needed a setback, and this works for the moment.

I liked also because it makes Hangman feel less Invincible as he has been. That'll mean a lot when he faces Omega because each near fall will be that much more stressful.

Yeah we certainly are in an interesting time in the industry when not kicking out after taking a killer sequence of moves capped off by a finisher is the more shocking outcome. (BTW I'm speaking about Pro Wrestling today as a whole not just AEW.)

For me it was less that and more "It's Hangman, he's been protected a lot and nobody else's kicked out of the Drill Killer and he seems like he would". And...well, he didn't.

I think Mox might have kicked out of the Drill Claw, but I don't think so. Maybe Weapon X. (A lot of his move names are just Wolverine easter eggs.)

I was legit surprised by this result as well, I thought for sure Hangman would get the win. I like it though, as others have said Cage needed a big win and this makes Hangman a little less overpowered without hurting him too much, so it's all good IMO.

It was very surprising, but the right call. Cage gains way more from winning than Page loses from taking the pin. Page is a top contender and over no matter what, has been a featured guy basically since day 1. Cage is talented but needs to build momentum. This was a great idea.

It was a smart way to temper Page's momentum without doing too much damage. I'll be curious to see where Cage goes from here. I think we're heading towards Stadium Stampede 2 with Page and Dark Order vs. HFO and now, I think they're actually going to do OC vs. Omega. I think they can get to All Out for Page vs. Omega in front of a crazy live crowd in Chicago.

Hangman is my favorite wrestler, and I am happy he was booked to lose. He didn't want Omega, he didn't handle being #1 well, this helps his story. He was too happy, he needs the struggle.
Brian Cage needed a signature win, this was a shocking win, and puts Team Taz in a better position. In theory, he could have a match with Omega for the world title, but have they done heel versus heel title matches?

I was shocked
Cage really needed the win and it doesn't really hurt Hangman Page too much

It was still too soon to go to Page/Omega, so this is a logical detour for Hangman

Cage needed this win, and Page's story still has legs.
However, I don't think this makes Cage the #1 yet, he still has to beat Orange Cassidy.

Hangman/Omega needs to happen in from of a crowd, Cage is turning face so going up against Omega and getting screwed by Starks out of jealousy is the best choice.

I was absolutely shocked and the entire match kept thinking that as wishy washy as I’ve been with Cage, he’s just a damn good movie-boss-muscle-type figure. And that his offense looks incredible (while hearing he’s nothing but safe). At the end of the match my smark-phantom-instincts kicked in wondering if Page had heat before realizing it was a different company.

I wondering about a Omega vs Cage title match. Cage has been trending that he might become face and he’d be the de facto face in a match with Omega. Omega beats him, Tazz berates him and Cage goes and kicks Team Tazz’s ass and becomes a full fledge babyface.
