This is a match that exists. It happened during a show at Quebec in 95 and who had the smart idea to think it needed to go 25 minutes?

Knowing Backlund at this time, 23 of it was probably stalling.

I know! When I clicked on the thread, I was hoping for a video. I can hear Backlund shouting at him for covering his face

Knowing Backlund at this time, 23 of it was probably stalling. I saw a Backlund-Savio Vega match in Chicago at the end of '95 that was 6-7 minutes of Backlund stalling, then Savio catching him with a small package for the win. That was the only move.

Same thing as a dark match for the Season's Beatings In Your House around the same time.

That's the one. I'm surprised there wasn't a loud "We got 'em!" yelled by Backlund.

A jockstrap as a facemask surely had to exasperate Mr.Backlund.

Same thing as a dark match for the Season's Beatings In Your House around the same time. Backlund was doing that match with everyone at the time. There was some abysmal matches with Man Mountain Rock that are on Youtube where he did the same thing. Problem with Backlund was that if you couldn't adapt to his style, meaning being a very well versed mat wrestler, it was impossible to do be able to do anything with him since he couldn't bump at all. I remember during his face run after his initial push died out and they started jobbing him he would never lose to the opponents finisher. It always was via small package like at Mania IX when he lost to Razor. Even if he was facing some giant guy like Diesel or Adam Bomb both of whom had probably never done a small package in their life. Not only did it look ridiculous but tt also just buried Backlund more because he was supposed to be this big amatuer collegiate wrestler and here he was losing to a wrestling move from these big brawler type guys.

Was it the opening match? Maybe the rest of the talent were delayed getting to the building and it was long to stall for time.
I recall a story where Duke Droese had to do the same thing once, with Aldo Montoya no less, and they just kept going until the rest of the talent started showing up and were literally being sent straight to the ring.

Oh, goodness gracious, no. This was the middle of the show. Fans already saw Alundra Blayze vs. Bertha Faye & the Blu Brothers face Billy Gunn, who teamed with Henry Godwinn that night.

Oh, goodness gracious, no. This was the middle of the show. Fans already saw Alundra Blayze vs. Bertha Faye & the Blu Brothers face Billy Gunn, who teamed with Henry Godwinn that night. Here's the card. Six matches with just one main-event-level star (Taker), which was pretty skimpy for a WWF show, even in 1995. Do you recall any matches advertised that didn't happen? LaFitte vs. Skip and Henry Godwinn in that tag match seem to indicate some condensing and reshuffling. WWF @ Valleyfield, Quebec - August 16, 1995Waylon Mercy defeated Bob Holly via submission with the sleeper WWF Women's Champion Alundra Blayze pinned Bertha Faye with a hurricanrana at 6:28 Billy Gunn & Henry Godwinn (sub. for Bart Gunn) defeated Jacob & Eli Blu when Godwinn scored the pin with the Slop Drop at 8:43 Bob Backlund defeated Aldo Montoya via submission with the Crossface Chicken Wing after more than 26 minutes (possibly 28:11) Jean Pierre Lafitte pinned Skip at 11:40 with the Cannonball after shoving him off the top; Lafitte played the babyface in the match The Undertaker defeated Kama in a casket match at 13:25 following a chokeslam and the tombstone Part of me wonders if Backlund or one of the agents felt like the fans needed more show than they were getting, so Backlund (with good intentions) volunteered to do an old-school 25 minutes with young Aldo.

I bet that was the plan for Jean Pierre Lafitte because it was in Quebec. They would always book him as a babyface because the Canadian fans were gonna cheer him anyway like they did for a lot of those types of guys like the Rougeaus and Dino Bravo.

I recall Cornette talking about an incident happening in the WWF around this period where a lot of wrestlers were stuck somewhere, and an early jobberific match had to go on for an obscene length of time to allow the wrestlers to arrive. I really can't see any other reason as to why a match like this would go on for that long.

I really can't see any other reason as to why a match like this would go on for that long. Here's the A show from Maine the same night, so it seems like most of the big names legit weren't planned for Quebec (this was two days after they taped Davey Boy's heel turn, which had not aired yet): WWF @ Bangor, ME - Auditorium - August 16, 1995Fatu pinned Hakushi with a bulldog Hunter Hearst Helmsley pinned 1-2-3 Kid with the Pedigree Savio Vega pinned Rad Radford with a kick to the head WWF World Champion Diesel & WWF IC Champion Shawn Michaels defeated Men on a Mission when Diesel pinned Sir Mo with a boot to the face; after the bout, Men on a Mission attacked Diesel & Michaels, with Razor Ramon attempting to make the save but was beaten down as well Razor Ramon defeated Psycho Sid via disqualification when Tatanka interfered WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Yokozuna defeated Lex Luger & Davey Boy Smith following a Yokozuna legdrop on Luger behind the referee's back; the Bulldog walked out on his partner during the match Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Tatanka in a strap match Three nights later, Backlund and Aldo did their marathon again. Bundy was originally scheduled LaFitte opponent (and probably was in Valleyfield, too). LaFitte definitely a deliberate face: WWF @ Sherbrooke, Quebec - Le Palais Des Sports Palace - August 19, 1995WWF Women's Champion Alundra Blayze pinned Bertha Faye with a Frankensteiner Bob Backlund defeated Aldo Montoya via submission at 20:00 with the Crossface Chickenwing Waylon Mercy defeated Bob Holly Billy Gunn & Henry Godwinn (sub. for Bart Gunn) defeated Jacob & Eli Blu Jean Pierre Lafitte defeated Skip (sub. for King Kong Bundy) (w/ Sunny) The Undertaker defeated Kama in a casket match And here's an oddity in between on the A show. Saturn and Kronus in the WWF? Looks like their only appearance. Kowalski favor? WWF @ Manchester, NH - August 17, 1995Perry Saturn & John Kronus defeated Tim McNeany & Smooth Operator Fatu defeated Hakushi Hunter Hearst Helmsley defeated the 1-2-3 Kid Savio Vega defeated Rad Radford WWF World Champion Diesel & WWF IC Champion Shawn Michaels defeated Men on a Mission Razor Ramon defeated Psycho Sid via disqualification WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Yokozuna defeated Lex Luger & Davey Boy Smith Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Tatanka in a strap match

Maybe it was a test for Aldo to see how long he could go with a veteran? Aldo always seemed like a credible opponent.
