I’ve been familiar with the story for years, but listening to Meltzer break down the story and it suddenly hit me. Rikidozan’s murder was a massive “When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong”
-Yakuza member steps on Rikidozan’s shoe, Rikidozan demands apology
-Yakuza dude basically says “get f***ed” and Rikidozan punches him in the face. This leads to a brawl
-Yakuza dude stabs Rikidozan to save his own ass, runs like hell
-Rikidozan ignores doctors orders and continues drinking, leading to his death.
That sounds straight out of Chappelle’s Show

Was the knife confirmed to also be soaked in piss, or was that part of it an urban legend? I just remember that being cited as a contributing factor to the wound killing him.

-Yakuza member steps on Rikidozan’s shoe, Rikidozan demands apology "Cause someone smudged your Puma." (to quote Chris Rock) Also, this sounds similar to Harry Houdini's death, where he had been attacked before a gig, was in pain but decided to do the gig before getting checked into a hospital, then he did in the hospital. Supposedly, had he seeked medical attention much earlier he could've survived.

I read somewhere that the whole, "You stepped on my shoe, man" crap was just a lie that Rikidozan used as an excuse to fight and beat up unsuspecting people. Obviously,he picked the wrong guy that night. Also, I read that the guy who stabbed him feels horrible about the incident to this day and visits and cleans his grave every year.

Wasn't the guy who stabbed him supposed to be tied into the Yakuza somehow as well? Was that just incidental to the stabbing? Or was it BS to begin with?

I read a bit of a book a while ago, the title of which eludes me, that went into how despite being a national hero in Japan and revered as the founding father of puroresu, Rikidozan was actually a raging alcoholic and all-round twat.

I always thought Rikidozan's murder was a hit placed on him for f***ing up Kimura so bad and not putting him over like the Yakuza wanted.

This seems like a not inappropriate place to mention that I gave a presentation on the history of pro wrestling in Japan in my college Japanese language class to a room full of students who couldn't possibly give less of a shit about pro wrestling if they tried. I don't really have anything valuable to add about Rikidozan, since my presentation was like just a wikipedia page read-out more or less, and given like (does the math) Jesus Christ 15 years ago.
I closed it off with a music video of the 2003 G1 Climax set to Bon Jovi - It's My Life sourced from my old backyard wrestling forum. (Backyard Wrestling Link 4 Life)
