Henry was over after his fake retirement speech and always thought they should have let him have the WWE Championship for a little while.

I'd say no especially as the plan was to have the Bryan vs. Cena match at Summerslam.
even though they had to be dragged kick and screaming to the the eventual proper resolution of the story there...
Cena vs. Bryan is a money match... Bryan vs. Henry really isn't.

Henry already got his gold watch world title reign in 2011. There was no reason to give him another just for the sake of it.

It would have looked really good on Ryback

Mark Henry vs. Daniel Bryan at Summerslam does not have the same hype to it especially considering it was a feud that had already happened by that point

It'd have been neat, but no, I think the time had passed by then.

Might as well have given Cena / Bryan while a great match really didn't amount to anything in its own right and was a largely terrible feud.

I loved the fake retirement segment and Henry's Hall of Pain shtick before it, but he was pretty washed up at this point. I'm glad Cena went over him and faced Bryan at SummerSlam, looking back on it.

At the very, very least it should have closed the show.

No. Henry had been with WWE since...1996? I think; it would be same, perhaps, as Kane going over Cena in 2013.
As tired as people might have been of John Cena at that point, having Henry go over would have been worse. This was at the same time that Big Show was putting Braun Strowman over which felt right, actually.

I would have loved it if he did but the Bryan win wouldn't have been as cool if Cena had just lost the title to Mark Henry and then won it back hella fast.

Nah, the start of Daniel Bryan's story arc wouldn't have gotten off to as hot of a start if it didn't start with Cena hand picking him as his opponent.

I kind of agree with you, but I will defend Mark Henry by saying at least his character was improving with age at this time, whereas Kane was a sad and pitiful sight for a number of years before he went away.

Maybe not but I would have given him the belt sometime between 2013 and 2014. Maybe not give Orton so many runs in latter 2013 and let Henry hold one. That whole "Bryan is champion no Randy no Bryan no Randy" could be spiced up some. Throw Henry in for the first Orton reign and then throw Randy in for the second and we good.

If it was a year earlier I'd say yes, but Mark's career seemed pretty fizzled by 2013.
